Bulldogs vs. Trojans Gameday
The Fresno State Bulldogs will visit the USC Trojans on Friday night as the Bulldogs kick off their 2026 college football season.
This game will take place at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Fans can catch the action on FOX at 9:00 PM ET on Friday, September 4, 2026.
Fresno State opens its season with a serious road test against a USC team that already has a win.
Fresno State finished last season with a strong 9-4 overall record after winning its bowl game. The Bulldogs went 5-3 in Mountain West play and produced matching 4-2 records at home and on the road. Their season ended with an 18-3 victory against Miami (OH) in the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl.
USC finished the 2025 season with a 9-4 overall record and went a perfect 7-0 at home. The Trojans enter this matchup ranked 14th and have already opened their 2026 season with a 42-26 victory against San Jose State. USC now gets its second straight home game before moving into the rest of its schedule.
The most recent meeting between these programs came in 2022, when USC defeated Fresno State 45-17. Fresno State has only one win in the series, while USC has controlled four of the five recognized meetings. The Bulldogs now return to the Coliseum looking for a much different result against an experienced Trojans team.

Fresno State Bulldogs vs. USC Trojans Odds & Last 5
The betting odds heavily favor USC heading into this Friday night matchup.
The consensus moneyline has USC sitting at -3200, while Fresno State comes back at +1282. That sizable difference shows the expectations surrounding a nationally ranked Trojans team playing its second straight game at home.
Fresno State closed last season with consecutive victories against San Jose State and Miami (OH). The Bulldogs rolled past San Jose State 41-14 before beating Miami (OH) 18-3 in the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl. Those victories allowed Fresno State to finish its first season under Matt Entz with a 9-4 record.
USC has already played once this season after beating San Jose State 42-26 in its opener. The Trojans generated 505 total yards, including 341 through the air and 164 on the ground. USC also produced 29 first downs and scored touchdowns on four of its first five possessions.
Trojans Stats
The USC Trojans enter this matchup after showing plenty of offensive firepower in their season opener.
USC generated 505 total yards in its 42-26 victory against San Jose State. The Trojans threw for 341 yards and rushed for another 164 while converting 9-of-13 third-down opportunities.
USC built a 28-0 halftime lead and remained in control throughout most of the opener. The Trojans scored four rushing touchdowns from four different players, with Jayden Maiava, Riley Wormley, King Miller and Shahn Alston each finding the end zone. Trent Mosley and Kayden Dixon-Wyatt also caught touchdown passes.
Jayden Maiava returns as one of the most important players on the USC offense. He started all 13 games last season and completed 265-of-403 passes for 3,711 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Maiava opened 2026 by helping the Trojans produce another big offensive performance against San Jose State.
USC also has several weapons surrounding its veteran quarterback. King Miller remains part of the rushing attack, while the Trojans showed plenty of options with the football in their season-opening victory. Fresno State’s defense will immediately face a difficult assignment against an offense that already has a game under its belt.

Bulldogs Stats
The Fresno State Bulldogs enter their 2026 opener after finishing last season with a 9-4 overall record.
Fresno State went 5-3 in Mountain West play and finished the year with consecutive victories. The Bulldogs defeated San Jose State 41-14 before holding Miami (OH) to three points in an 18-3 Arizona Bowl victory.
The Fresno State defense was one of the team’s biggest strengths last season. The Bulldogs allowed only 153.8 passing yards per game and held opposing quarterbacks to a 53.8 completion percentage. Much of that defensive production returns for the 2026 season.
Simeon Harris is one of the key returning defenders after recording 54 tackles and five interceptions last season. K’Vion Thunderbird provides another versatile option for the defense, while Deijon Laffitte and Dylan Hampsten help anchor the defensive front.
That experienced unit could be especially important while Fresno State breaks in a new starting quarterback.
The Bulldogs also return some established offensive weapons despite the change at quarterback. Rayshon Luke returns to the backfield, while Josiah Freeman is the leading returning receiver after catching 52 passes for 642 yards and 6 touchdowns last season. Fresno State will need that returning experience as its new quarterback settles into the offense.

Bulldogs vs. Trojans QB Matchup
Jayden Maiava returns as the starting quarterback for the USC Trojans in 2026.
Maiava started all 13 games last season and completed 265-of-403 passes for 3,711 yards. He threw 24 touchdowns against 10 interceptions while also rushing for 157 yards and six touchdowns.
The veteran quarterback has already gotten his 2026 season underway against San Jose State. Maiava helped USC generate 341 passing yards and 505 yards of total offense in a 42-26 victory. His return gives the Trojans a major experience advantage at QB heading into Friday night.
Fresno State enters its season opener with considerably more uncertainty at quarterback.
E.J. Warner was the Bulldogs’ primary quarterback last season, but Fresno State is turning to a new starter in 2026. The Bulldogs’ current quarterback room includes Jayden Mandal, Khristian Martin, Jacob Chambers, Jonathan Craft and Deagan Rose.
Fresno State enters this matchup with only one career FBS start among its current QB’s. Mandal owns that start after previously starting against Northern Illinois in the 2024 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, while an injury kept him out during the 2025 season.
That lack of returning experience creates a major early test for whoever takes the first snaps against USC.
Fresno State Bulldogs vs. USC Trojans bottom line: Fresno State opens its season with an experienced defense but major questions at quarterback, while USC already has a win on the board and brings returning starter Jayden Maiava into another home matchup at the Coliseum.

Bulldogs Trojans Free Pick: Fresno State +23.0
Here is my Bulldogs Trojans free pick: USC is dangerous at home, but laying 23 points against a Fresno State team that’s been competitive away from home feels expensive. I’ll grab the points.
Fresno State has won 4 of its last 5 road games, which gives the Bulldogs some credibility entering a difficult environment. They’ve also covered 7 of their last 12 games as an underdog.
USC has won 7 straight home games, so I’m not pretending the Trojans aren’t capable of making this ugly. However, winning comfortably and covering more than 3 touchdowns are different assignments. Big difference.
Fresno State’s recent road success gives me enough confidence to take 23 points rather than asking USC to deliver another blowout.
The Bulldogs have also gone 16-13 ATS following a victory, another respectable trend supporting the underdog angle. Fresno State doesn’t need to match USC offensively to cash this ticket.
Does USC really need to win by 24? Yep, and that’s where I hesitate.
What’s more, the Trojans should generate plenty of offense, but Fresno State has shown enough defensive playmaking ability to potentially steal a possession or create a short field. One turnover can matter plenty when you’re holding this many points.
My college football betting system points to Fresno State +23, and I’ll trust the Bulldogs to stay close enough to cover.
