USC’s run during the early 2000’s peaked during the 2005 season, and they kicked that season off with a iconic battle with Pat Hill’s Fresno State Bulldogs. Reggie Bush provided a Heisman moment and the rest was history.
Now let’s forward to 2022, and the Bulldogs will make the trip south to Los Angeles to take on the Trojans for the fifth time in school history. USC opens up as the 11-point favorites, with the total opening at a whopping 72.5.
Fresno State Bulldogs
Fresno State kicked their season off with a 28-point win over in-state foe Cal Poly, and they looked pretty good offensively. Fresno always play the Pac 12 well, and they nearly pulled off another victory over the conference last Saturday.
Last weekend, Fresno State lost to Oregon State at home, 35-32, dropping to 0-2 ATS on the year.
Not many quarterbacks in the country bring more experience to the table then Jake Haener. The two-year starter was phenomenal in __ __’s Air Raid last season, even breaking a few of Derek Carr’s school records. He’s been stellar through the first two contests, passing for 737 yards with three touchdowns to no interceptions.
Jordan Mims is the lead back for the Bulldogs. The fifth-year senior is very versatile, and fits the James White mold. Mims gained 98 yards and scored three total touchdowns (2 rush, 1 rec) in the win over Cal Poly, then followed it up with a 122-yard, two-score performance against Oregon State.
Haener has the blessing of having multiple, reliable pass catchers again this season. Cal transfer Nikko Remigio has come in and found chemistry wiith Haener early, gaining 100 yards in each of the first two games this season.
Jalen Moreno-Cooper returned for his senior season, and he’s tied for the team lead with Remigio in catches (15) through the first pair of games. Josh Kelly. Erik Brooks, and Zane Pope round out a deep wideout room for Fresno.
USC Trojans
The Lincoln Riley era began on a strong note with a win over Rice at the Coliseum. The Trojans exploded for 66 points, covering the massive 32-point margin along the way. Southern Cal had a tall task to open Pac-12 play last Saturday, but they didn’t fold.
Last weekend, USC defeated in-state nemesis Stanford in Palo Alto to open Pac 12 play, 41-28, covering the tall 9-point road spread.
Caleb Williams came over with Coach Riley, and he did not disappoint in his debut. The former OU QB completed 86% of his passes and tossed a pair of touchdowns in the opener against Rice, than followed it up with an even sharper performance against Stanford.
Williams threw for 341 yards and four scores in his first taste of Pac 12 action, raising his season totals to 590 passing yards and six touchdowns.
After Williams led the team in rushing against Rice, Travis Dye had a huge game against Stanford. The Oregon transfer turned 15 touches into 124 yards, including a 27-yard touchdown run. Former Stanford back Austin Jones compliments him in the backfield, and he scored twice in the win over RIce.
Tahj Washington and Jordan Addison are going to give USC one of their best wideout tandems in recent memory. Washington has recorded back-to-back 600-yard seasona, while Addison came over from Pittsburgh after having one of the most prolific seasons in college football history (93/1479/17).
Addison picked right up where he left off, scoring twice against Rice, then following it up with a seven-catch, 172-yard, two-score performance in the win over Stanford. OU transfer Mario Williams’ rapport with Caleb Williams was on display as well, as he added four catches and 74 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown as well.

It’s happened rather quickly, but USC might be back to dominating and competing at a very high rate. It may feel too soon to decide, but USC belongs up there with the elite teams in the country. Fresno State brings a very experienced unit into LA, but they might themselves over matched early. The over feels very high here, and with both sides being potent enough to hit it, I like trusting the Trojan pedigree here. Look for USC to close the non-conference slate out strong here with a strong effort on both sides of the ball.
