The Fresno State Bulldogs will travel and take on the Boise State Broncos from Albertsons Stadium this Friday night on FS1. The Broncos will open as the 7-point favorites here at home, with the total opening at 45.5.
HISTORY: Boise and Fresno have faced off for the Milk Can in nearly every season since 2001, dating back to their time as rivals in the WAC. The Broncos lead the all-time series 16-7, after winning last year’s meeting, 40-14.
Fresno State Bulldogs
Fresno State kicked their season off with a 28-point win over in-state foe Cal Poly, and they looked pretty good offensively. A pair of defeats from PAC-12 schools Oregon State and USC sent them into their extended bye week. The Bulldogs came out of their break a bit too rusty, because their Week 5 performance was borderline embarrassing.
Last weekend, Fresno State lost to Connecticut, giving them their first Power 5 win since 2019.
Fresno State scores 24.5 points per game, while allowing 26.5 points per game.
Not many quarterbacks in the country bring more experience to the table then Jake Haener. The two-year starter was phenomenal in Jeff Tedford’s Air Raid last season, even breaking a few of Derek Carr’s school records. His absence was glaring last weekend, and clearly led to the final result. His status must be monitored prior to this one, and if he can’t go Logan Fife will likely start again.
Haener has 854 passing yards with four touchdowns to one interception on the season.
Jordan Mims is the lead back for the Bulldogs. The fifth-year senior is very versatile, and fits the James White mold. Mims gained 98 yards and scored three total touchdowns (2 rush, 1 rec) in the win over Cal Poly, then followed it up with a 122-yard, two-score performance against Oregon State. Mims also gained 114 rushing yards in the loss to Southern Cal.
Jalen Moreno-Cooper leads the Bulldogs in receptions (28) and receiving yards (284) through their first four games. Cal transfe Nikko Remigio recorded 100 yards in each of his first two games with Fresno.
Boise State Broncos
Boise State delivered mixed results during the first four weeks of the season, and losses to Oregon State and UTEP sent them into Mountain West play with an uneasy feeling. The Broncos got a familiar foe at home last Friday, and finally came through with a quality win.
In Week 5, Boise State beat San Diego State, 35-13, improving to 2-3 ATS this season.
Boise State scores 24.6 points per game, while allowing 19.2 points per game.
Hank Bachmeier has been serviceable over his four seasons behind center, but it appears that the senior quarterback’s time at Boise is over after entering the transfer portal. Redshirt freshman Taylen Green took the reigns last week, and while there’s plenty of room to grow, he brings an extra dimension with his legs. Green rushed for 102 yards and two scores against Oregon State, and he recorded 105 yards and two more scores versus SDSU last Friday.
George Holani heads the backfield for Boise. The junior back brings a versatile skill set to the table, gaining 75 yards or more in each of the past three games. The Broncos will likely lean on him again here after a 131-yard, two-touchdown performance against the Aztecs.
Holani led the squad in rushing way back in 2019, and he’s up to 392 rushing yards, with 13 catches and three total touchdowns (3 rush, 2 rec) for the season.
No one’s been able to replace the void left by Khalif Shakur at wideout thus far. Stefan Cobbs has been the most reliable target, and he’s got 15 catches for 114 receiving yards and two touchdowns through three games.

Both schools come into this one with question marks at the quarterback position. Fresno senior QB Jake Haener is indeed set to miss this one, while Boise just had a four-year starter enter the transfer portal. Fresno’s got to have a massive chip on their should after losing to UConn, but the lack of Haener makes them very hard to get behind.
We could be in for a big feel-it-all, field position type of game here, with both teams learning about their quarterbacks. Whoever protects the football will win the game, and Boise on the blue turf is never a bad bet. The Bronco defense thrived last week against pedestrian QB play, and they have a lot of that same success this weekend.
