After splitting a pair of difficult road games, the Ball State Cardinals will finally be playing at home this season.
First year head coach Mike Neu has made it clear that the Cardinals ground attack will be the strength of their offense.
In the season opener against Georgia State, the Cardinals racked up 325 of their 455 total yards on the ground, but after falling behind early in their second game against Indiana, Ball State was forced to go to the passing game and lost the game 30-20.
The Cardinals should find it less difficult to establish a ground attack this week, Especially with both James Gilbert and Darian Green averaging over five yards per carry.
Eastern Kentucky had more than a fair share of problems trying to stop the running game of Purdue University in their season opener. They gave up a total of 261 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns, in the 4th quarter.
Yes, the 4th quarter.
The Colonels were able to win their second game without a problem against Pikeville, but they still gave up over 100 yards on the ground.
Eastern Kentucky Colonels
The Colonels have already played a good half of football against a FBS team, bet weren’t able to hang in for an entire game.
There was a lot of noise about standout quarterback Maty Mauk, but he hasn’t been on the field since going 2-7 with 2 interceptions against Purdue.
Eastern Kentucky doesn’t need to be to concerned due to the fact that they have run twice as many run plays as they have passing.
Ball State Cardinals
Coach Neu had been hoping that the playing time throughout his freshman season would have led to a productive season for quarterback Riley Neal this year.
With only completing 50 percent of his passes and a 1-3 touchdown-interception ratio, it hasn’t been the case so far.
Neu who spent last season as a quarterbacks coach in the NFL last year will need to spend some more time with Neal if he expects him to be able to make 30 attempts per game.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends
- Gilbert and Green should be able to find plenty of running room for Ball State.
- The Cardinals look great on special teams and have already returned a blocked punt for a touchdown this season.
- Ball State’s defense was able to hold on against IU and allowed the offense an opportunity to make a comeback attempt.
Free Week 3 NCAA Football Prediction
This could be a great game for Riley Neal to get things on track for the season through the air.
With the strength of the Cardinals defense, I don’t think Maty Mauk of Eastern Kentucky will be able to make any improvements and may just land himself a backup position for the remainder of the year.

This should be a really good first half of football.
Eastern Kentucky still needs to show that the defense can play hard an entire game and stop the run, but I don’t look for that to happen this week with Ball States ground attack.
The Cardinals should start to run away with the by the end of the third quarter.
