Duke’s schedule has been tough to start the season, but they haven’t done much to impress anyone with their 0-4 start, besides playing Virginia Tech close.
The Orange are coming off a bye week, but before that, they found themselves in the win column with a victory over Georgia Tech.
Can the Blue Devils find a way to win a game? Will Syracuse protect their home field? Let’s break it down.
Duke Blue Devils
The Blue Devils have been pretty solid on defense this year and probably the only thing that has kept them in some games. They rank 19th in points against only allowing 32.3 over four games.
Their most important players are the defensive ends Chris Rumph II and Victor Dimukeje. They have been able to successfully attack the edges and have led the Blue Devils to become a top 5 defense in sacking the quarterback with 12 sacks on the year as a defense. Victor Dimukeje tied at 4.0 sacks to lead the nation.
The other side of the ball is a whole different story…
The Duke Blue Devils offense is bad. They are only averaging 17.5 points per game in college football. The pile up a fair amount of passing yards, probably because they are always losing, with 258.2 yards per game.
They have two running backs Deon Jackson and Mateo Durant that will have to have a good day on Saturday versus a defense that allows 187 rushing yards per game.
In 2019, they led the league in turnovers averaging 2.3 a game, which has carried over into the 2020 season. Duke has an astonishing 15 turnovers through 4 games to lead the nation yet again. Quarterback Chase Brice is responsible for 7 of those turnovers himself.
For Duke to win this game, they will have to clean up their act on the offensive end to limit those turnovers.
Syracuse Orange
The Syracuse Orange offense is similarly as bad. The offense only averages 243.3 yards per game, 149.3 of those through the air, and 94 yards on the ground. Averaging only 17.7 PPG, you will be frustrated by this offense.
The offense seemed to figure it out versus Georgia Tech two weeks ago as it scored 37 points. Freshman running back Sean Tucker has been their best playing with 135 yards rushing, 4.6 yards per carry, and two touchdowns.
The Orange do have the advantage on defense though as this team is able to create lots of turnovers. They are the highest-ranked team in the ACC, beating out Miami, Clemson, Notre Dame, and Pitt, with a turnover margin of +6.

Free Week 6 NCAA Football Pick
Last year Syracuse won this game in North Carolina by a score of 49-6.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Syracuse +2.5
The difference in this game will be the ability to create extra short field drives by Syracuse’s ability to turn the ball over. They may be out with some players in the secondary, but that should not play too big of an impact as Duke has proven it is not good at protecting the football.
The offense for Syracuse will not need to be proficient if Cuse wins the turnover battle, which I fully suspect them to win.
Coming off a bye week giving Syracuse extra time to prepare does not hurt either.
My pick is Cuse +2.5 and Money Line.
