Saturday, MWC rivals Colorado State and Utah State square off in a contest leaning heavily toward the Aggies.
Last season, Utah State ran through the Mountain West while earning the nation’s no. 22 final ranking after routing North Texas 52-13 to claim the New Mexico Bowl.
Conversely, Colorado State finished 3-9 in 2018. And following a 1-3 start, featuring losses vs. Toledo, Arkansas and Colorado, the Rams’ downward trend figures to continue.

Colorado State Rams
Most of Colorado State’s recent struggles originate from poor defense. Nationally, the Rams rank 123rd out of 130 FBS programs while allowing 40.5 points per contest.
Despite fairly decent winter recruiting, CSU lost many players from last season’s hard-luck group. Minus veteran guidance, especially defensively, where communication is vital, Colorado State is working from a deficit.
Another omen against the Rams this year is QB Colin Hill’s season-ending knee injury. Before tearing his left ACL, Hill gained eight touchdowns against two interceptions through three starts.
Now, transfer Patrick O’ Brien has taken the reigns behind center. O’Brien completed 32-of-52 passes for 405 yards, one touchdown and one interception during last week’s 41-35 loss vs. Toledo.
While O’Brien did his job offensively last week as CSU gained 694 yards overall, again the Rams’ defense fell flat when most needed.
Opposite an unorganized Colorado State defense, the Rockets tallied 436 rushing yards – sophomore running back Bryant Koback added 228 of those yards and three of his team’s four ground scores.

Lacking basic tackling fundamentals, and starting an unproven, emergency quarterback, today’s contest could get out of hand early vs. Utah State.
Utah State Aggies
After a fantastic 2018, Utah State remains a bit shell-shocked in the wake of former head coach Matt Wells’ departure for Texas Tech. With Wells gone, Gary Anderson is back in as lead Utah State playcaller.
Anderson coached the Aggies from 2009-2012, when he left the program for ‘greener pastures’ after an 11-2 campaign. Anderson then led Wisconsin to a couple of nice runs before he fizzled out at Oregon State and needed a year away from coaching.
Returning seven all-conference performers from 2018, the veteran Aggies are learning Anderson’s new system.
This wrinkle has most affected standout QB Jordan Love. Love (1,003 yards passing, four touchdowns, three interceptions) has already thrown half the amount of interceptions he allowed last season.
And last week vs. San Diego State University, Love completed just 30-of-47 passes and added no touchdowns.
Luckily, saftey Shaq Bond’s pick six, along with running back Jaylen Warren’s touchdown, and kicker Dominik Eberle’s three made field goals, proved enough offense for Utah State to take SDSU’s unbeaten card.
Though, this week the opposition should prove a little lighter.

Having pushed undefeated power-five foe Wake Forest to the limit, there’s little doubt, barring the miraculous, that USU shouldn’t easily handle Colorado State today.
4* Free NCAA Betting Prediction: Total Over & Colorado State Covers
Meanwhile, behind a solid offense, CSU has laid 30-plus points on each of its opponents this year. This factor, combined with Love’s learning-curve will see the total go over, but Utah State fail to cover a lofty spread vs. a team known to generate points.
