The Army Black Knights will host their Patriot League rivals, the Colgate Raiders, from Michie Stadium this Saturday on CBSS. The Black Knights come into this one as the heavy 28-point favorites at home here, with the total opening at 49.5.
HISTORY: Army and Colgate go way back due to their Patriot League ties. The Cadets and the Raiders faced off during every other season from 1985-1997, and the Black Knights lead the all-time series 23-5.
Colgate Raiders
Colgate’s 1-4 record doesn’t tell the full story, as the Raiders have covered in four of five tries. From our point of view, they’ve been an asset, making use of their large margins. The Raiders covered in Palo Alto versus Stanford, and they picked up a 10-point road underdog victory over Maine in Week 2. Colgate then lost to Penn, but they covered a friendly margin at home versus Patriot League leader Holy Cross.
In Week 5, Colgate lost to in-state foe Cornell at home, 34-31, after a clutch fourth quarter from the Big Red.
Colgate scores 17.2 points per game, while allowing 30.6 ppg.
Michael Brescia’s been a tale of two tapes this season. The sophomore signal caller has been pretty effective on the ground this season, but the Raiders have found themselves in must-pass situations often, and it’s led to mediocre QB play. Brescia has yet to complete more than 50% of his passes in a game, but he scored on the ground three times in their lone win over Maine.
Brescia has thrown for 577 passing yards with zero touchdowns to three interceptions, while rushing for 260 yards and five touchdowns.
Brescia leads the team in rushing, while Max Hurleman and Jaedon Henry have split the work. Hurleman leads the bunch with 197 yards and 11 catches, while Henry scored the first touchdown of his career last week versus Cornell. Senior wideout Garrett Oakey looks set to lead the team in receiving again, and he’s got 19 catches for 183 yards thus far.
Army Black Knights
Army has found themselves in a few shootouts early. The Black Knights opened their season in Conway, falling in to Coastal Carolina after an eventful fourth quarter. Army hosted UTSA in their home opener, and watched Cade Ballard throw for an unheard of 200+ passing yards. After failing to hold off the Roadrunners in overtime, the Cadets defeated Villanova to pick up their first win of the season. They’ve struggled in two games after their bye week, and failed to replicate one of their best offensive outputs ever last weekend.
In Week 6, Army loss to Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, 45-10, dropping to 1-4 overall and ATS.
The Black Knights have managed to use two QBs effectively early, and they managed to add a third to the picture last weekend. Cade Ballard has brought the passing element to the offense, and his performance against UTSA was great by Army’s standards, tossing for 221 yards, while adding 58 yards on the ground.
Tyhier Tyler took the wheel versus Villanova. After tossing touchdowns in each of the first two games, the veteran dual-threat QB scored three times on the ground against the Wildcats. Tyler’s selfless in his role, and it allows both QBs to thrive. Tyler has thrown for 198 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while adding 293 yards and six scores through the Cadets first five games.
Jemel Jones is a familiar face, and his return to the field gives Army an interesting tandem at the QB position. Jones bring a skill set similar to Tyler, and he threw for a touchdown in his return last week.
Tyrell Robinson, Tyson Riley, and Jakobi Buchanan have all contributed early. Robinson rushed for 603 yards last season, and he’s on pace to break that with a team-lead 321 rushing yards early. Riley got it going against Nova, gashing them for 158 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown run. Buchanan is the bruiser of the rotation and he’s gained 188 yards and scored three times thus far.
Ay’Juan Marshall leads the wideout room with four catches for 141 receiving yards and two scores.
