The Cincinnati Bearcats will travel and take on the Tulsa Golden Hurricane for some AAC action this Saturday nite on ESPNU. Cinci will open as the ten-point favorites here on the road, with the total opening at 58.5.
HISTORY: Cincinnati and Tulsa’s football series date way back to their time as Missouri Valley Conference rivals. The series is tied 17-17-2, with the Bearcats winning four of the five matchups since the schools joined the AAC.
Cincinnati Bearcats
Cincinatti couldn’t register that signature win they’d need for another CFB Playoff appearance in Week 1, but they bounced back well early. After the road loss to Arkansas, the Bearcats beat up on Kennesaw State then defeated longtime rival Miami (OH) for the 16th straight season. Last weekend, Cinci did manage to a notch a non-conference win over a red Power 5 school.
In Week 4, Cincinnati defeated Indiana at home, covering the large 17-point spread.
Ben Bryant has come back to Cinci and filled the shoes of former AAC Offensive Player of the Year Desmond Riddler admirably. The EMU transfer played well against Arkansas in a hostile environment, and he’s surpassed the 335-yard mark in each of the past two games, tossing for four touchdowns in the win over Indiana.
Charles McClelland has got the majority of the work early for Cinci. The senior back had a big game against in-state foe Miami, going for 101 yards and scoring twice. McClelland leads the Bearcats with 236 rushing yards, while LSU transfer Corey Kiner has added 147 yards and scored in each of the first four games.
Tyler Scott taken a big leap with the departure of Alex Pierce. Rocking the iconic #21 at wideout, Scott is coming off of the two best games of his young career. After burning Miami for eight catches and 119 yards, Scott posted career highs of 10 receptions, 185 receiving yards and three touchdowns in win over Indiana.
Scott has been pretty dynamic early,, and he leads Cinci in receptions (26), receiving yards (423), and touchdowns (5). Tre Tucker has also produced early this season, catching 17 passes for 275 yards and a score.
Tulsa Golden Hurricane
Tulsa was competitive every time out during September. A double-overtime loss to Wyoming was a tough way to open the season, but the Golden Hurricane responded by defeating Northern Illinois in their home opener. Tulsa beat up on FCS power Jacksonville State seven days later, but their effort last weekend may have been their best one yet, even in a losing effort.
In Week 4, Tulsa lost to Ole Miss in Oxford, 35-27, admirably covering the 21-point underdog spread.
Davis Brin has shown major improvement after starting 12 games last season. The senior quarterback has been efficient early, and he’s done a really good job of cutting down the turnovers. Brin threw 16 picks last season, and he’s only thrown one thus far. Brin opened the season with a 400-yard outing at Wyoming, and then followed it up with a pair of four-touchdown performances.
Brin has thrown for 1,318 passing yards, with 12 touchdowns to one interception during the month of September.
Steven Anderson has given Tulsa steady production in the lead role. The senior back is a 242-pound bruiser, who gained a season-high 76 yards in the hard fought game with Ole Miss. Anderson scored four touchdowns in the first three games, and he leads Tulsa with 206 rushing yards.
The availability of Keylon Stokes will go along way for Tulsa in this one. The sixth-year senior took a scary hit last weekend in Oxford, but he’s been a very big part of the offense thus far. Stokes caught eight or more passes and gained 135 yards or higher in each of the first three games.
Stokes leads Tulsa in catches (31) and receiving yards (507), and they’ve also got solid production from Juancarlos Santana (18/381/5) and Malachi Jones (21/248/1).

This is the sleeper game on a loaded Week 5 PM slate. Cinci dominated last week and looked really good against a Power 5 school. Tulsa nearly went into Oxford and picked up the biggest win in school history. This is going to be a tough spot for the Bearcats to come in and cover, so we see another angle.
Ben Bryant and Davis Brin have both performed well thus far, and are capable of providing the fireworks for a shootout here. The number feels manageable, and both offenses are capable of doing the heavy lifting. Keylan Stokes and Tyler Scott are two of the best receivers in the conference, and there should be plenty of chunk plays and opportunities in this one.
