The Charleston Southern Buccaneers opened up their 2017 season with a matchup against Dan Mullen’s Mississippi State squad. How’d that game go? It was a 49-0 beatdown that just about everyone saw coming.
In 2018? Expect much of the same. And no, not just because Dan Mullen is now the head coach of the Florida Gators—although the irony in that is really quite beautiful.
The Bucs are out for revenge against Mullen, so while the question here isn’t “can Charleston Southern win straight up?” it’s worth asking whether or not this team can keep things close early and throughout.
Charleston Southern Buccaneers
The Buccaneers are playing Florida in Week 1 for two key reasons.
- A nice paycheck to the athletic department. Nobody expects them to win, but playing the role of sacrificial lamb becomes easier to swallow when a fat check is headed your way.
- Florida isn’t exactly known for scheduling powerhouse out-of-conference opponents.
With all that in mind, this game really is about setting the stage for Florida and less about what the Buccaneers are going to accomplish.
As long as Charleston Southern comes out of this one healthy, there won’t be any reason to get down on themselves if the final score looks something like the opening week disaster of last season.
The Florida Gators will be better this season under Dan Mullen. They went just 4-7 a season ago, losing six of their final seven games.
It’ll be at least two or three weeks before we can know just how much better this squad is. But expect to see improvements, beginning in Week 1.
Against Charleston Southern, there really are only two main goals:
- Stay healthy. This is easier said than done, but in a game against inferior competition, pulling your starters and playing a conservative second half become parts of the game plan, barring a shocking and unforeseen turn of competitive events.
- Take care of the football. There’s no better way to lose a winnable game than turning the ball over. Whether it be through the air or on the ground, Florida must hang onto the rock. If the Gators get too loose with the pigskin, we could end up with a competitive second or third quarter, meaning Goal No. 1 becomes more difficult to accomplish.

As much as we’d love to say this game could be a competitive one considering Florida is entering a new era and will need to figure out quite a few things before proving it’s officially “back” that’s just not the case here.

If Charleston Southern can make this game a slog with long possessions and a strong victory in overall clock management, this game could be low-scoring on both sides, which would bode well for the Bucs.
Unfortunately for them, we just don’t see that happening.
Florida by a mile.
