Buckeyes Stats

Ohio State scored 468 points across 14 games, averaging 33.4 points per game. The Buckeyes generated 5,916 total yards, including 3,755 passing yards and 2,161 rushing yards.
The defense was even more dominant throughout the 2025 season. Ohio State allowed only 130 points, an average of 9.3 per game, while surrendering 219.1 total yards per contest. The Buckeyes also recorded 35 sacks and eight interceptions while holding opponents to only 89.4 rushing yards per game.

The defense also had trouble consistently getting off the field. Ball State allowed 358 points and surrendered 4,868 total yards during the season. However, the Cardinals intercepted nine passes and recovered four opposing fumbles, giving the defense some ability to create turnovers.

Cardinals vs. Buckeyes QB Matchup
Julian Sayin returns as Ohio State’s starting quarterback for the second consecutive season.
Sayin started throughout the 2025 campaign and completed 77.0 percent of his passes. He threw for 3,610 yards with 32 touchdowns and only eight interceptions while helping Ohio State win its first 12 games.
His production made him a Heisman Trophy finalist and one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the country. Sayin now enters 2026 as a team captain with another loaded group of offensive weapons around him. Ohio State gets major continuity at the game’s most important position.
Keldric Luster has officially been named Ball State’s starting quarterback for the 2026 season.
Luster transferred to Ball State after spending the 2025 season at Texas State and previously playing at SMU. He enters the season with nine career appearances, completing 4-of-12 passes for 37 yards while adding 76 rushing yards on 16 carries.
Luster will be making a huge jump in responsibility when he leads the Cardinals into Ohio Stadium. His first start for Ball State comes against a defense that allowed only 9.3 points per game last season. That makes this about as difficult an opening assignment as a new starting quarterback can draw.
Ball State Cardinals vs. Ohio State Buckeyes bottom line: Ball State begins 2026 trying to improve after a four-win season and seven road losses, while top-ranked Ohio State returns elite talent on both sides of the ball and owns one of the strongest home-field advantages in college football.

Cardinals Buckeyes Free Pick: Ohio State -50.5
Here is my Cardinals Buckeyes free pick: Ohio State opens its 2026 season at home against a Ball State team that had major problems away from home last year.
I’m willing to lay the monster number.
Ball State finished 4-8 last season and went 0-7 in road games. The Cardinals also struggled badly against Power-conference opponents, losing 31-0 at Purdue and 42-3 at Auburn.
Ohio State brings a completely different level of talent, especially with Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith returning to an offense loaded with playmakers. The Buckeyes have also won 26 consecutive season openers. Huge mismatch.
Ball State’s 0-7 road record last season makes it difficult for me to trust the Cardinals even with more than 7 touchdowns.
Additionally, Ohio State is 8-0 in season openers under Ryan Day and has averaged a 25.4-point winning margin in those games. This matchup provides an opportunity to stretch that margin considerably.
Can Ball State score enough to protect 50.5 points? I’m skeptical.
It has to be said, laying this kind of number always creates late backdoor risk, especially if Ohio State starts rotating heavily with a huge lead.
The Buckeyes need to build separation early, and Ball State’s road performance last season gives me confidence they can.
Give me Ohio State -50.5, with the Buckeyes’ talent advantage and Ball State’s road struggles driving the play.
