The Army Black Knights will travel north to Winston-Salem and take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons from Truist Field this Saturday nite on CSS. Wake Forest will open as the 17-point favorites at home, with the total opening at 67.
HISTORY: Wake and Army have more than a brief history, as this will mark the eighth time they’ve met as non-conference opponents in the past 15 years. Wake Forest leads the all-time series 12-5 after winning six of those seven meetings.
Army Black Knights
Army has found themselves in a few shootouts early. The Black Knights opened their season in Conway, falling in to Coastal Carolina after an eventful fourth quarter. Army hosted UTSA in their home opener, and watched Cade Ballard throw for an unheard of 200+ passing yards. After failing to hold off the Roadrunners in overtime, the Cadets defeated Villanova to pick up their first win of the season. Last weekend, they couldn’t stop a hungry, winless group of Panthers.
In Week 5, Army loss to Georgia State at home, dropping to 1-3 overall and ATS.
The Black Knights have managed to use two QBs effectively early. Cade Ballard has brought the passing element to the offense, and his performance against UTSA was great by Army’s standards, tossing for 221 yards, while adding 58 yards on the ground.
Tyhier Tyler took the wheel versus Villanova. After tossing touchdowns in each of the first two games, the veteran dual-threat QB scored three times on the ground against the Wildcats. Tyler’s selfless in his role, and it allows both QBs to thrive. Tyler has thrown for 131 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while adding 253 yards and six scores through the Cadets first four games.
Tyrell Robinson, Tyson Riley, and Jakobi Buchanan have all contributed early. Robinson rushed for 603 yards last season, and he’s on pace to break that with a team-lead 282 rushing yards early. Riley got it going against Nova, gashing them for 158 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown run. Buchanan is the bruiser of the rotation and he’s gained 172 yards and scored three times thus far.
Ay’Juan Marshall leads the wideout room with four catches for 141 receiving yards and two scores.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Wake Forest survived a regional non-conference slate and jumped out to a 3-0 start. The Demon Deacons hosted VMI in the opener, and covered the 34-point margin right on the head. In Week 2, traveled to Nashville and defeated Vanderbilt by 20, then avoided disaster by beating Liberty by one-point at home. Dave Clawson’s group fell to Clemson in their ACC opener in a shootout, but they went and got a big win last weekend.
In Week 5, Wake Forest defeated Florida State in Tallahassee, 31-21, improving to 4-1 against the spread this season.
Wake handled business in their opener, but when they got word Sam Hartman could return, it put playoff aspirations on their season. Hartman was phenomenal during Wake’s 11-win 2021 season, and he’s one of the most experienced leaders in the country. The fifth-year senior brings 35 games of experience to the position, and he’s been great again thus far. Hartman threw for four touchdowns in his season debut at Vanderbilt, then tossed six touchdowns in the overtime loss.
Hartman has thrown for 1,196 passing yards with 15 touchdowns to two interceptions in his first four starts.
Christian Turner and Justice Ellison have split touches through the first five weeks of action. Ellison leads the team in rushing after a 114-yard performance against FSU. Turner scored last weekend as well, and he’s second on the team with 240 rushing yards.
A.T. Perry is a stud, and his return gives Wake one of the best receivers in the country. After breaking out and recording 1,166 yards in his third season, Perry leads the team in receiving early with 24 receptions for 364 receiving yards. Jahmal Banks and Donovan Greene both have multi-score games already this season, with the former leading the Deacs with five touchdown catches.

Free Week 6 NCAA Football Final Analysis:
The Wake Forest/Army matchup last season shocked us all and ended up being a shootout. This year, Wake should have a lot less trouble laying the points, it’ll be more about the Demon Deacons keeping the margin against a resilient Army group.
The total feels steep here, but Wake hasn’t defended well through the first part of the season, allowing 21 points or more during their last four games. It’s high unlikely these two schools replicate their 2021 meeting and combine for over 120 points, there’s a good chance they hit the magic number in efforts to recreate that. I’ll trust the magic here.
