Arkansas jumped out to a strong 3-0 start here in 2022, but things have went left quick. The Hogs opened their season with a strong non-conference victory over Cincinnati, then began SEC play with a 14-point victory over South Carolina. After the smooth start, the Razorbacks dropped their first road game of the season to Texas A&M, then lost star quarterback to injury in the loss to Alabama. KJ Jefferson’s status will be make or break again for Arkansas this weekend. The star QB is set to practice and play in Provo Saturday, but any setbacks and the Hogs might be looking at a fifth straight loss. Jefferson is such a different maker, and he makes everyone around him better.
Jefferson has thrown for 1,096 passing yards with nine touchdowns to one interception through five games, while rushing for 312 yards and four scores. He’s got NFL potential.
Raheim Sanders’ second year leap has been astounding. After gaining 499 yards last season, the sophomore back has eclipsed the 110-yard mark in each of the first three games. Sanders was really active against Missouri State, rushing for a career-high 167 yards and two scores, while adding a 73-yard touchdown catch as well. He’s kept the party during SEC play and he’s up to 695 yards on 5.6 yards per carry, with five rushing touchdowns for the season.
There’s been a collective effort to replace former Hog Treylon Burks’ presence at the wideout position. Former OU wideout Jadon Haselwood has been steady, leading the Hogs with 27 receptions and gained 364 receiving yards. Toledo transfer Matt Landers has added 17 catches for 261 yards alongside him.
BYU Cougars
BYU opened the 2022 season with big aspirations and a pair of victories. The Cougars traveled to Tampa and dominated USF in Week 1, before earning big time win over number-nine ranked Baylor in their home opener. BYU then suffered their first loss of the season on the road versus Oregon, but they bounced back by pouncing on a pair of longtime rivals in Wyoming and Utah State. The Cougars traveled to South Bend last weekend to face their big brothers, and could not get the job done.
In Week 6, BYU lost to Notre Dame in a Battle of Independents, 28-20, dropping to 2-4 ATS this season.
Jaren Hall’s road struggles continued last weekend in South Bend. Kalani Sitake’s reserved playcallng didn’t help, but the moment looked too big for the junior quarterback last week, and a return to LaVell Edwards could do the trick this week. A third loss would alter BYU’s New Years’ Day bowl hopes, and with this possibly being their toughest game remaining, they need him to show up big.
Hall’s thrown for 1,558 passing yards with 14 touchdowns to two interceptions on the season.
Christopher Brooks has received the first crack at replacing record-breaking back Tyler Allgeier, and he delivered in Week 1, rushing for 135 yards and a touchdown in the win over USF. The Cal transfer has scored in each of the last four games, and he went for 86 yards versus Notre Dame.
Despite the absence of Puka Nacua, their most explosive player, the Cougars found production from everywhere in their receiver room. Keanu Hill is set to eclipse his 2021 total after a pair of big games, and he leads BYU with 334 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Kody Epps had a big game versus Notre Dame, picking up a career-high 100 receiving yards and scoring twice. The redshirt freshman has scored in his last four games, and he paces the Cougs with 25 receptions.

Brigham Young’s moneyline looks very appealing here as home underdogs, Jaren Hall showing up in a big game remains to be seen right now though. K.J. Jefferson’s return will make this a much more desireable game, but how will he hold up in his first game back in front of a hostile Cougar crowd?
Both sides come into this one with questions at the biggest position, so look for the ground game to play a big role in this one. How well BYU contains Hogs back Raheim Sanders will be a determining factor, and whoever protects the football will win this game.
