Wildcats vs. Cougars Gameday
Arizona heads to Provo for its first road test of the season against No. 15 BYU at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Both Big 12 teams are 1-0 after comfortable opening victories. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM ET on FOX.
The Wildcats opened with a 35-7 victory over Northern Arizona, producing 520 total yards and 28 first downs. Noah Fifita directed an efficient passing attack, while Arizona also rushed for 206 yards and controlled the game after halftime.
BYU rallied from 10 points down to beat Arizona 33-27 in double overtime last season.
BYU had an even easier opener, overwhelming Utah Tech 63-7 at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The Cougars produced 525 total yards, rushed for 312 and forced four turnovers, while Bear Bachmeier accounted for four touchdowns.
BYU has won the last two meetings and leads the all-time series 14-12-1. Arizona’s challenge is reversing last year’s result after letting a late lead disappear in Tucson.

Arizona Wildcats vs. BYU Cougars Odds & Last 5
BYU is favored by 7.5 points at home, with Arizona getting more than a touchdown. The Cougars are around -285 on the moneyline, while the Wildcats are roughly +230. The total opened above 50 but has been dropping during the week.
The spread has remained much steadier than the total.
Both teams easily won their openers, although Arizona failed to cover a number north of 30 after Northern Arizona scored a late defensive touchdown. BYU had no such problem against Utah Tech, cruising past a spread that closed near seven touchdowns.
Last year’s meeting provides a more useful comparison than either opener. Arizona pushed BYU into double overtime before the Cougars escaped 33-27, and the Wildcats now bring Fifita back for another shot at the matchup.
Cougars Stats
BYU dominated Utah Tech in every phase of its opener. The Cougars finished with 525 total yards, including 312 on the ground, and averaged 7.2 yards per play while scoring nine touchdowns.
Bear Bachmeier accounted for four of them.
Bachmeier completed 15 of 20 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. He also scored on the ground before giving way to the backups with BYU comfortably ahead.
The Cougars spread their rushing production throughout the roster.
Devaughn Eka led BYU with 59 yards and a touchdown, while seven different players recorded at least 20 rushing yards. Legend Glasker supplied the biggest receiving plays with three catches for 65 yards and two touchdowns.
BYU’s defense created four turnovers, intercepting three passes and recovering a fumble. The Cougars allowed only 222 total yards and kept Utah Tech scoreless until the fourth quarter, when the outcome had already been decided.

Wildcats Stats
Arizona controlled Northern Arizona with 520 total yards and 28 first downs. The Wildcats threw for 314 yards and rushed for 206, giving the offense balance throughout a game they led 35-0 before a late interception return produced NAU’s only points.
Noah Fifita started his final Arizona season efficiently.
Fifita completed 29 of 34 passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. He connected with nine different receivers and completed better than 85 percent of his attempts.
The Wildcats also distributed the rushing workload.
Kedrick Reescano led Arizona with 48 yards and two touchdowns, while Antwan Roberts Jr. added 45 yards and another score. Giovanni Richardson paced the receivers with eight catches for 96 yards.
Arizona’s defense held Northern Arizona to 188 total yards and only eight first downs. The Wildcats recorded five sacks and an interception, keeping the Lumberjacks’ offense scoreless throughout the game.

Wildcats vs. Cougars QB Matchup
Noah Fifita gives Arizona a major experience advantage at quarterback. The fifth-year starter entered 2026 as the nation’s active career leader in touchdown passes and has been running the Wildcats’ offense since taking over the job in 2023.
Bear Bachmeier counters with plenty of big-game experience of his own.
The BYU quarterback threw three touchdown passes in the opener and also contributed on the ground. More importantly for this matchup, Bachmeier helped engineer last year’s fourth-quarter comeback against Arizona before scoring again in double overtime.
Fifita was extremely accurate against Northern Arizona.
His challenge now is producing that efficiency at LaVell Edwards Stadium against a BYU defense that forced four turnovers in Week 1. The Cougars also intercepted Fifita twice during last season’s meeting, although he threw two touchdown passes and helped Arizona build a late lead.
Both quarterbacks have enough experience to handle a close fourth-quarter game. Bachmeier has the home-field advantage, while Fifita gives Arizona a veteran presence that makes the Wildcats dangerous getting more than a touchdown.
Arizona Wildcats vs. BYU Cougars bottom line: BYU brings home-field advantage and a powerful running game, while Arizona counters with an experienced quarterback and enough offensive balance to challenge the Cougars.

Wildcats Cougars Free Pick: Arizona Wildcats +7.5
Here is my Wildcats Cougars free pick: I’m taking Arizona +7.5 in Provo. BYU deserves to be favored at home, but getting more than a touchdown with an experienced quarterback like Noah Fifita has my attention.
Arizona produced 520 total yards against Northern Arizona, and Fifita completed 29 of 34 passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns. That experience at quarterback gives the Wildcats a chance to handle a difficult road environment.
Last year’s matchup gives me another reason to grab the points.
Arizona pushed BYU to double overtime last season before falling by six points.
The Wildcats led by 10 in the fourth quarter of that game, so this isn’t a matchup where I’m eager to lay more than a touchdown. BYU eventually escaped 33-27 behind its running game and late execution.
Bear Bachmeier looked sharp against Utah Tech, but Arizona represents a serious jump in competition.
The Wildcats also showed balance in their opener, rushing for 206 yards while the defense held Northern Arizona to seven points. BYU will test that unit much more severely, especially on the ground, but Arizona doesn’t need to win this game.
I expect another competitive Big 12 matchup deep into the fourth quarter. Give me the experienced quarterback and Arizona +7.5.
