The Arizona State Sun Devils will travel to Los Angeles and take on the USC Trojans from the LA Coliseum this Saturday night on ESPN. USC will open as the 25-point favorites at home, with the total opening at 60.
HISTORY: USC and Arizona State have faced in nearly every season since 1978, when the latter left the WAC to join the Pac-12, and it’s quietly been one of the staples of the conference during this span. USC leads a back-n-forth all-time series 23-14, and they’ll be out for revenge after losing in Tempe last season.
Arizona State Sun Devils
The Arizona State football program endured a tough month of September. It literally started great, with the Sun Devils picking up a 37-point win over Northern Arizona on the first day of the month. They lost on the road to Oklahoma State nine days later, which wasn’t a bad loss by any means, but the turmoil brewing within the program was nearing its boiling point. A home loss to the MAC’s Eastern Michigan led to a very messy exit for Herm Edwards regime. ASU opened Pac-12 as hosts last Saturday, but could not stop the bleeding.
Last weekend, Arizona State lost to Utah at home, 34-13, dropping to 1-3 ATS this season.
Emory Jones transferred into a toxic situation, and it’s showed early. The former Florida QB was sacked five times and committed three turnovers in the loss to Utah, and he may be in for the similar troubles this weekend.
Jones has thrown for 818 passing yards with three touchdowns to two interceptions, and scored three touchdowns on the ground through the first month of the season.
The vision was there with the transfer pairing of Jones and Xazavian Valladay. The Wyoming transfer rushed for 100 yards in each of ASU’s first three games, and he’s been one of the lone bright spots on this team thus far.
Valladay has gained 391 rushing yards and scored four touchdowns through the first four games. Elijhah Badger has been Jones’ most reliable threat outside, and he leads the Sun Devils in receptions (22) and receiving yards (293).
USC Trojans
It only took four weeks, but it really looks like the USC Trojans are back and look like the team to beat out West. Southern Cal thumped Rice in the opener by 42, then picked up victories over in-state foes Stanford and Fresno State. The Trojans had another tall task in Pac-12 play last Saturday, and found a way to prevail.
Last weekend, USC kept their CFB Playoff aspirations alive by defeating Oregon State in Corvallis, 17-14, failing to cover for the first time this season.
Caleb Williams came over with Coach Riley, and he has not disappointed. The former OU QB was rattled last weekend against the Beavers, but came through with a big time game-winning drive. He’s yet to turn the ball over, and he looks like the best to grace the position at USC in a while.
Williams has thrown for 1,054 passing yards with nine touchdowns to no interceptions during the month of September.
After Williams led the team in rushing against Rice, Travis Dye has taken the lead role by storm. The Oregon transfer has rushed for 100 yards in each of the last three games, and he torched ASU in his matchup with them last season. Dye leads the Trojans with 360 rushing yards and three touchdowns, while former Stanford back Austin Jones has complimented with 207 rushing yards and three scores.
Tahj Washington and Jordan Addison are going to give USC one of their best wideout tandems in recent memory. Washington has recorded back-to-back 600-yard seasona, while Addison came over from Pittsburgh after having one of the most prolific seasons in college football history (93/1479/17).
Addison picked right up where he left off, scoring twice against Rice, then following it up with a seven-catch, 172-yard, two-score performance in the win over Stanford. OU transfer Mario Williams’ rapport with Caleb Williams was on display as well, as he added four catches and 74 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown as well.

Arizona State still has a lot to clean up both on and off the field, and it might get dark at the Coliseum for them. With last year’s matchup fresh in mind, the Trojans should overpower and overwhelm ASU on both sides of the ball here, and lay the points. Blowout from the Men of Troy.
