Hallelujah! Stanford can finally see the light!
Or—at least they’ll finally see daylight on Saturday when they play their first afternoon game of the season after spending the vast majority of their time on the field deep into the night, reaching historic levels of Pac-12 After-Dark.
Kicking off at 1 p.m. local time in California, the Cardinal enter with an identical record as the 2-4 Sun Devils. But it’s not just the record—it’s the way they’ve mirrored each other’s schedules. Both Arizona and Stanford won their opening-week matchups in blowout fashion; they each went on to drop their next four in a row; and each is coming off its second victory of the year, both straight-up wins as double-digit dogs.
The mirroring, at least on that surface level, is downright impressive. But something’s got to give, cause this ain’t the NFL where we could walk away with a tie.
The opening line for this one was set at Stanford -3, and that’s where it stands as of this writing.
Arizona State Sun Devils
ESPN’s Matchup Predictor is nervous about Arizona State, favoring it in only 37.5 percent of its simulations. The team’s raw stats are part of that mindset, but the truth is, like their schedule, the Sun Devils and Cardinal both score and keep teams from scoring at nearly identical levels.
On the year, Arizona State scores just 26.8 points per game, the 145th ranking in the nation—a tie with Stanford.
Defensively, the Sun Devils give up 30.2 points per contest and sit in the 98th rank so far this season. The Cardinal? They’re just under 30 at 29.7 in 92nd.
Last week, ASU earned its second win of the season—a 45-38 victory over a Washington Huskies team that has proved vulnerable but was still No. 21 in the polls at the time. That type of game can be a momentum-shifter, but as we’ve already discussed, Stanford might have some of that good juju on their side, too.
Stanford Cardinal
The one raw stat where Stanford does rank a respectable 45th is in passing yards, racking up 266 yards per contest. But there’s more context to that stat you should realize, and it has to do with their win last week.
Entering last week’s game against Notre Dame—a game that despite its low score saw Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee out-duel Drew Pyne by a relative long shot—the Cardinal had just the 92nd-ranked pass blocking in terms of efficiency. But they made the move to start right tackle Myles Hinton amid other shakeups on the offensive line.
Gaining momentum off a win is big for anybody, but doing having it be the result of a meaningful move makes you believe it’s not just momentum but the start of something sustainable.
You know this home crowd will be back and ready to go for the first time since that tough Oregon State loss two outings back.

Free Week 8 NCAA Football Final Analysis:
So we’ve decided both teams had potentially momentum-shifting games in their last outings. Both wins were their first since opening week. Both teams are also averaging the exact same points per game. And both give up basically the same points per game.
Apparently…both of these teams are in the exact…same…boat.
Only one, however, can truly steal momentum coming out of this one. Smart money this week feels like Stanford at home.
