After their week one game against Nebraska was cancelled, Akron came out in week two and blew out their opponent, Morgan State, 41-7. They now will have their chance to knock off a Power 5 school and perhaps earn some respect for the MAC.
In week one, Northwestern went into a hostile environment at Purdue and managed to knock them off, 31-27. Then, last week their offense fell flat on their face with a 7-21 loss to Duke. With Akron coming to town, the Wildcats will have the chance to get back in the win column and prepare for the rest of their Big Ten schedule.
Akron looked impressive in their first game of the season against Morgan State. Quarterback, Kato Nelson did not exactly light it up, but he did throw for 232 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.
As for their rushing game, RB Van Edwards Jr. had 17 carries for 109 yards and two touchdowns. He averaged 6.4 yards per carry which should be a good sign going into this weeks’ matchup as a heavy underdog.
The Zips defense also played very well, forcing three turnovers in this game. One thing they do need to tighten up however is turnovers. They had three against Morgan State, and cannot afford to do the same in a hostile environment.
In week one, Northwestern looked very good against a conference rival. Week two, not so much. They struggled mightily to score against Duke. Quarterback, Clayton Thorson threw for 198 yards, but had no passing touchdowns and threw an interception.
Things were not all bad for Northwestern, running back, Jeremy Larkin had 24 carries for 121 yards and scored the first and only touchdown of the day for the Wildcats. After Larkin’s first quarter touchdown, they could not find the end zone again even though they out gained Duke in yards, 381-301.
Another standout for Northwestern was wide receiver, Flynn Nagel. Nagel had 12 catches for 133 yards, but again the Wildcats just could not seem to find the end zone due to lack of execution in the red zone.
This is a big game for Northwestern because they cannot afford to drop to 1-2 going into conference play. Even though the result against Akron does not affect their conference standing, it still could play a factor to which bowl game they end up in at the end of the year.

4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: UNDER 45.5 Points
Northwestern will need to rely on their top running back and wide receiver to provide the offense for the Wildcats. They will also need their quarterback to be more efficient with the ball an avoid costly turnovers.
While Akron scored 41 against Morgan State, Northwestern has a much better defense and will be able to keep Akron from scoring an overwhelming amount.
