2019 West Virginia Mountaineers Predictions: Team Strengths
ReSet/Reboot: Per the intro there are some big changes in Morgantown. Neal Brown has been a big winner at Troy including back to back to back bowl games. I also like that he is not a system guy.
The other big change is at quarterback with Austin Kendall. The dude was at Oklahoma so even though he did not win the job remember who did.
Brown is going to get these guys playing to strengths to they can have some success right away. He does not plan on waiting a full cycle to get his guys.
Kendall has the talent to be one of the best QBs in the league this season. No waiting for him either.
Strong Upfront: It is never a bad thing to return the majority of your offensive line starters, especially in a transition season.
Four of five returns this season and they all have good size. Center is the position they are looking to fill but they have a junior in mind so there is some experience there.
With the line strong and running back position deeper than receiver they might be more of a running team this season.
2019 West Virginia Mountainees Predictions: Team Weaknesses
Who is in the Secondary?: Defense is going to be key and it looked like there would be enough returning material to be better than OK.
However, three safeties entered the transfer portal. A little surprising given that I think this program upgraded at the coaching position with a proven winner.
They lost their leading tackler on defense from last last and are auditioning to fill the role. With that and the safety concerns the middle of the defense might not be up to snuff.
Even though Kendall is a talent the receiving core is missing its biggest threats from a year ago.
Odds are they can find the pass catchers they need but this was an elite group a year ago. They need to have some balance.
Brown is a very good coach and I am confident he will have the offense more than functional but you need to score a lot of points to win in the Big 12.
West Virginia Mountaineers Prediction: 5-7
I like Brown a lot but I am not sure there is enough to get to a bowl game.
This is a pretty tough schedule, even FCS James Madison might give them some trouble.
I also don’t like that they have Oklahoma State and TCU at the end, those teams are going to get better as the season goes on.
There is a chance they win a couple I am not expecting them too but flipping it to 7-5 seems like the ceiling for this group.
