2019 Football Preview – ACC – Hokies
Looking for 2019 Virginia Tech Hokies predictions? Since joining the ACC the Hokies might be having more success in hoops than on the gridiron. That is pretty hard to fathom. This year’s version is not expected to flip that much. They should be more than good enough not to embarrass themselves but not exactly killing it.

Last year the defense fell apart. That is a rarity in Blacksburg but with lots of starters returning that group will have to lead the way.
2019 Virginia Tech Hokies Predictions: Team Strengths
Experience on Defense: Last year Virginia Tech gave up 31ppg, 10th in the conference and 85th nationally. We are not accustomed to seeing that.
However, with all 11 starters returning and Bud Foster leading the way you have to think this group will be a lot better than it was a season ago.
Dax Hollifield was just a freshman last season and really came on late. He looks like one of those instinctive players who can lead a defense.

They are going to be strong up the middle with Rayshard Ashby and Reggie Floyd, the top tacklers who are returning at linebacker and safety respectively.
More Throw Than Run: Ryan Willis took the job last year and ran with it, essentially forcing Josh Jackson to transfer.
Damon Hazelton was his top receiver last year as a sophomore and he returns. He averaged more than 15 yards per catch a year ago.
Dalton Keen is another junior who is emerging at the TE position. Willis has the weapons and opportunity to be a very productive pivot for the Hokies. .
2019 Virginia Tech Hokies Predictions: Team Weaknesses
More Punch up Front: Last year’s leading rusher, Steven Peoples is gone. The next guy up, Deshawn McClease only had 433 yards a year ago. Willis is not a dynamic runner.
Virginia Tech is also replacing three of five offensive linemen from a year ago from a team that was no exactly killing it in the rushing game. How well the line comes together is going to be key.
Two of their top three recruits were offensive guards but playing freshmen linemen is not ideal either. If the offensive line is a mess we will not see a return to prominence for the Hokies.

Virginia Tech needs to use all of that experience to get better up front on defense.
Last season Houshun Gaines led teh team with just 4.5 sacks and might not even be a starter this season depending on how things shake out in camp. You have to be able to pressure the quarterback.
You also have to be able to take the ball away. Returning CB Caleb Farley led the team with two interceptions. That’s a nice start to a career but VT is kind of cornerback university. They need more from him.
Virginia Tech Hokies Prediction: 7-5
This is not a great Virginia Tech team but if they get the defense turned around they should be better than a year ago.
They do not ease into the season as they have Boston College on the road in week 1. After that they have three winnable game before heading to Miami the first weekend in October.
Their conference schedule is light but the finale against Virginia is no longer a gimme. Some have the Cavs as the favourite to take the division.

This is a schedule where a big improvement could have a lot of dividend but I am not seeing it here. They should get to a bowl game though.
