2019 Football Preview – AAC – Golden Hurricane
Looking for 2019 Tulsa Golden Hurricane predictions? Tulsa used to be a pretty proud mid major program but last season they won only three games playing in the American. They are returning a bunch of starters from a defense that was decent in the conference so even though we think about this program as being one of those that just tosses the ball all over the yard that group may have to lead.

Tulsa has not had much success in the AAC. The scoring fell off last season. They are hoping that improvement on offense will lead to more wins.
2019 Tulsa Golden Hurricane Predictions: Team Strengths
Defense First: Last season Tulsa put up some interesting numbers on defense, including first in the AAC and 8th in the nation against the pass.
That was somewhat negated by the fact that they were very easy to run on but overall they finished 4th in the AAC and return 7 starters on that side of the ball including 5 of 6 up front.
Cooper Edmiston paced the team with 113 tackles and the senior back for more. Impressively he also led the team in interceptions with 4.

Tulsa’s defense made the biggest improvement in terms of yards per play last season on defense. There is still room to improve.
The Running Game: Zack Smith is a transfer quarterback from Baylor. He is expected to start but the more established par of the offense is a running game that average 200ypg a year ago.
From that group Shamari Brooks returns as the lead back looking to improve upon a near 1000 yard season.
He and Smith have the left side of the offensive line returning in Chris Ivy and Chris Paul, a senior and a sophomore. Receiver Keylon Stokes is also a threat to run the ball on fly sweeps and other gadget plays.
2019 Tulsa Golden Hurricane Predictions: Team Weaknesses
Stability at QB: Zach Smith is expected to play in place of Seth Boomer who was not ready for prime time last season as a freshman.
Smith was a fairly touted recruit who regressed from a freshman to a sophomore at Baylor. The fact that he is being handed the job says a lot about the situation.
Tulsa was 11th in the passing offense in the AAC a year ago. They used to crank out 4000 yard receivers but have struggled with that phase of the game lately. Smith is not a sure thing.

Special teams could be a concern with a new kicker for 2019.
The kicker looks to be freshman Jacob Rainey. This team needs to be able to convert drives into points an missed 9 field goals a year ago. They need to get more comfortable with the efficiency of the kicking game.
I think there is going to be pressure on coach Montgomery this season. The program is not in a better place than when he arrived and this might be his last chance to save his job. The QB is someone he is familiar with but will that be enough to get them over the hump.
Tulsa Golden Hurricane Prediction: 3-9
I am not seeing improvement in terms of wins and losses for Tulsa this season.
The nonconference is actually pretty tough. They start at Michigan State and host Oklahoma State. Those are sure losses. They also visit San Jose State and host Wyoming. Those are not gimmes for Tulsa. If they are 0-4 Montgomery might not make it through the season.
In the AAC they might have the toughest schedule in the league with home games against UCF, Houston and Memphis and a trip to Cincinnati. Road trips to SMU, Tulane and East Carolina will be tough for this group.

Tulsa should be competitive this season but this is not a schedule that is going to lead to improvement in wins and losses. They could even recede a little if teams in their tier are improved.
