Before the seven-win season in 2017, New Mexico State had averaged just 2.5 wins under Doug Martin since 2013, so Aggies fans are hoping this is a sign of things to come and not an anomaly destined to come back to reality.
2018 New Mexico State Aggies Predictions: Team Strengths
Continuity on the line: New Mexico State has yet to announce a starting quarterback. And that’s okay. We probably won’t hear anything until after the summer comes to a close.
Regardless of who earns the job, we already know one thing: That dude is going to have a heck of a line protecting him, and more specifically, he’s going to have a line that is very familiar with one another, as the team is set to bring back six starters in that category for 2018.

Continued Improvement on Defense: The difference between 2017 and 2016 was night and day. In a matter of a year, New Mexico’s defense went from 11 sacks for 43 and transitioned from one of the worst defensive units in the league to one that was a top-10 team in the country in terms of third-down stoppage.
This team should see continued improvement, even if some of the numbers dip going from the Sun Belt to an FBS Independent.
2018 New Mexico State Aggies Predictions: Team Weaknesses
Tempering Expectations: This program and its fan base are excited, and quite frankly, they deserve to be. The team is transitioning into its place as an FBS Independent and its coming off its first winning season in 15 years.
That said, the players on the field can’t assume it’s going to be all rainbows and butterflies in 2018.

The honest truth is that this team will likely continue improving even when it doesn’t look like it on the field. That’s what playing tougher competition does to you.
If the Aggies can keep their heads high in close losses, those should be considered moral victories.
Letting the season slip away, however, when things are going as well as they did a year ago could be disastrous to the development of the program.
New Mexico State Aggies Prediction: 6-6
We’re predicting another 6-6 regular season, which may seem like treading water on paper, but as we’ve already hammered home, the same level of success on a higher level is indicative of legitimate improvement.

Expect another bowl game for this program, and don’t be shocked it it comes away with a win in that game en route to a truly solid 2019 season—not just one we can say was won behind the scenes and in the intangibles.
