2018 Football Preview – Sun Belt – Coastal Carolina Chanticleers
Looking for 2018 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers predictions? The Chanticleers joined the Sun Belt Conference last season as a program that had won an average of 10.3 contests per year over the prior three seasons. Unfortunately, their first year following a 10-win campaign as an FCS Independent (2016) proved to be a rough one.

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers went 3-9 in 2017 and while we’d like to think a dramatic upswing is in the works, we’re likely looking at a few-years process before we see legitimate improvement.
2018 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Predictions: Team Strengths
Running back depth: This team has plenty of questions at quarterback. That’s going to be a huge concern for the Chanticleers, but more on that later.
One area where Coastal Carolina can hang its hat is in the backfield. They have Marcus Outlow transferring from BC, Alex James and Jacqez Hairston entering their sophomore seasons, and they’re also inserting sophomore Torrance Marable to the lineup.
Marable was the Big South leader with 1,038 yards on the ground in 2017. This combo of backs will help alleviate the concerns that come from the quarterback position.
Not all of them, of course, but enough to at least take the pressure of whoever becomes the lead QB this season.
2018 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Predictions: Team Weaknesses
Questions at QB: This program goes through quarterbacks like, well, it’s really incomparable. In 2016, the team played seven different young men behind center. In 2017? They used six.
That’s hardly a recipe for success, but the bigger deal is that we have no indication at this point that it’ll be any better in 2018.
Takeaways: A good, sturdy defense can survive without forcing turnovers. After all, forcing a punt is the next best thing, getting stops in the red zone is crucial, and without making too much of a “duh” statement, simply preventing points is the ultimate goal, not getting highlight-worthy interceptions.
All that said, the Chants aren’t sturdy on offense, which means big plays become hugely important. If Coastal Carolina—dead last in the conference in sacks and second-to-last in interceptions—can’t force turnovers this season, the team is going to get behind early in games and have to rely more and more on that shaky passing game and less and less on one of its few strengths in the backfield.
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Prediction: 3-9
This team is officially bowl eligible, but that can’t be the goal this season. Not after winning just two games a year ago.
This season needs to be about moderate improvements. A four- or five-win campaign would be a huge step for them, so we’re taking the moderate approach and giving them a one-game improvement.
2019 should be the real start to their improvement, and that’s when their stature in the Sun Belt Conference will at least be a talking point. Until then, small victories will be the name of the game for the Chants.
