However, Utah State crashed last year as they went 3-9 and missed out on a bowl game for the first time in six years. They’ll look to rebound, but it’s still a rebuilding project for the Aggies.
2017 Utah State Aggies Predictions: Team Strengths
Gunslinger: One of the few positives that Utah State can boast is that they have a capable quarterback leading the way and Kent Myers might end up stealing a game or two for them this season.
Myers is a potential late draft pick for an NFL team. Myers would be a project, but he has the tools and upside to get better. Myers has a strong arm and he is a fine athlete.
Myers will be counted on to lead this Aggie offense.
QB in the Secondary: Dallin Leavitt is a player that coaches rave about. Leavitt made his mark last year with the Aggies, but unfortunately, injuries derailed what would have been a great year.
As it was, Leavitt made plenty of tackles – important open field tackles mind you – and he picked off three passes last year.
It goes without saying, but Leavitt will have to stay healthy for the Aggies this season to have any sort of hope of having a decent year. And I use decent in the loosest sense of the word.
2017 Utah State Aggies Predictions: Team Weaknesses
Build the Trenches: Utah State will have to find a way to protect Kent Myers. The Aggies lost four of their starters from a year ago and they will have to be replaced. Not an easy task to find linemen and develop a chemistry with them to play as one unit.
The same could be said on the defensive side, as well. Utah State lost three defensive linemen and two linebackers from last year. The Aggies have been a team known for their defense, but they struggled badly last year and losing starters won’t help.
They aren’t bringing in the strongest of recruiting classes. This will be a struggle for the Aggies, once again, this year.
Utah State Aggies Prediction: 3-9
Not only are the Aggies rebuilding, but they have a tough schedule. They start the season on the road for three of their first four games.
This is significant as they have a very winnable game against San Jose State, but before they do they have to travel across the country to play Wake Forest. You can’t underestimate the impact of virtually traveling all around the country.
Plus, they are going to be getting beat up in their games against Wisconsin and already previously said Wake Forest. Utah State will have taken some lumps as they start up conference play against San Jose State. And then they play BYU on a short week. Luckily, for the Aggies it is a home game.
I think, realistically, if they match their win total from last year it will be a good year – relatively speaking, of course. Nobody wants to expect their team to win just three games in a season, but that’s where expectations need to be.
This team isn’t ready to go back to a bowl and their schedule does them no favors.
