2017 UCF Knights Predictions: Team Strengths
It was a Building Year: In 2013 the Knights went 12-1 including a win the Fiesta Bowl. Instead of remaining as a mid major superpower they were winless two years later. Scott Frost had to contend with a lot in his first season as a head coach anywhere.
Frost did a good job righting the ship on and off the field and with his Oregon roots he might get this team going even more than George O’Leary did.
Similar to the Ducks this team is about speed and style but it will take a while to get things going because recruiting is going to be a part of it.
They were tops in recruiting in the conference according to most ranking systems and they have some natural advantages that can be exploited.
Defense First: UCF is in fertile ground to pick up athletic defenders like Shaquem Griffin…that are overlooked by other programs.
Griffin is missing a hand (not a typo) but it did not stop him from collecting 11.5 sacks and being the defensive player in the league last season.
Jamiyus Pittman is a typical athletic DT/NT and teamed with Griffin he makes sure that offenses are uncomfortable.
2017 UCF Knights Predictions: Team Weaknesses
Need More Time!: Though last year’s turnaround was an important first step the reality is that a lot of the players on the roster were part of a winless team.
A number of sophomores got playing time as freshman but they are far from proven commodities, especially QB McKenzie Milton.
Milton is not going to remind anyone of Blake Bortles back there. He needs to use his athleticism more and make more plays with his legs. They are not going to beat teams by having him be a traditional passer.
This team is still transitioning to a speedier style of play. Even though it has advantages for them it is a hard transition for a program on both sides of the ball.
The entire secondary is being remade this season with four new starters including a freshman- Richie Grant – who might be the best player in the unit.
Tristan Payton is an explosive receiver but he will miss the first six games of the season due to a drug suspension. They need him to create big plays on receptions and returns.
UCF Knights Prediction
Rome wasn’t built in a day!
I am projecting a decline in wins as the schedule is stiffer than a year ago.
UCF is decidedly in the spongy middle of the league so some turnover luck or other unseen factors could get them to a bowl but I don’t like the probability. I think they might be favoured in just one road game
The key will be whether they can maintain focus and intensity if it is obvious they are not as successful as a year ago. This is going to be a tougher coaching job for Frost.
