2017 Football Preview – Big 12 – Red Raiders
Looking for 2017 Texas Tech Red raiders predictions? The Red Raiders did not have a very good season in 2016. There is a lot of heat on Kliff Kingsbury to turn things around but in a B12 that has a lot of teams on an upward trajectory that might be really tough. He could be the first coach fired this season.

2017 Texas Tech Red Raiders Predictions: Team Strengths
Catching the Ball: For as long as KK is the coach they are going to continue with a pass heavy attack – 1st in the nation in passing last season.
The QB might not have much experience but three of the top four receivers return.
Not only do they have experience but there is a good mix. Keke Coutee is super quick. He averaged more than 16ypc last season and scored 7 times.

Dylan Cantrell is a big body that can outmuscle cornerbacks and safeties. He was second on the team in catches a year ago and could see more balls this season. He will likely be the safety blanket for the new QB.
A Couple of Playmakers: Texas Tech is bad on defense and has been for so long it is like it is in their DNA.
This year as they looking to improve they can can count on their leading tackler from a year ago LB Jordyn Brooks.
Also in the fold is CB Jah’Shawn Johnson who led the with two interceptions last season. Both will need to make more difference making plays this year.
2017 Texas Tech Red Raiders Predictions: Team Weaknesses
New Face of the Program?: Over the past two season Pat Mahomes put up amazing numbers. It wasn’t all system either considering where he got drafted.
This season it looks like the job will fall to Nic Shimonek, who has little real game action. You have to think things won’t be as slick as they were a year ago.
More importantly with their defense as bad as it has been they cannot afford an offensive slide.

Plain and simple the defense has to be a lot better. The question is can they.
The fact that they play in Texas was thought to mean they would be able to get some talent on that side of the ball but it has been pretty sparse and their tempo does not help at all.
Last year they were dead last yielding 43ppg. That’s a ton. They need to reduce that by at least a TD and the pace they play at doesn’t help this group at all. Something may have to give.
Texas Tech Red Raiders Prediction: 4-8
The Red Raiders need to be careful in that opener against Eastern Washington. They have scared a lot of FBS opponents.
Win or lose that one and I still wonder if Kingsbury gets out of that first month. Arizona State is no power house and they get them at home but I would make it a 50/50 game.
After the that the schedule is pretty tough, only Kansas might be a guaranteed victory and even that is on the road. Texas and TCU will be better than they were a year ago too.

It might be time for a change at TT. Mike Leach had some success with the style they play but no coach since has been able to match it. I think this is going to be another down year so it is just a matter of when not if Kingsbury is fired.
