2017 Football Preview – Mountain West – Spartans
Looking for 2017 San Jose State Spartans predictions? The Spartans endured a very brutal 2016 season and decided to make a coaching change. They brought in Brent Brennan who was a former Spartans assistant coach. He is already making dividends bringing in the third best mid major recruiting class in all the country. He is a high energy coach that some are comparing to P.J Fleck, the head coach of the Minnesota Gophers.

2017 San Jose State Spartans Predictions: Team Strengths
New Blood: What this team really needed was a change. They had grown stagnant under coach Caragher who was bringing in good recruits but the results weren’t showing on the field.
Brennan brings a high energy to the team, and if nothing else, they should at least be fun to watch and the sidelines should be energetic.
He has also done a great job recruiting and he has got the alumni excited about a program that has had it’s terms of struggles.
It seems like the team has already bought in and they should play really hard for him in the first season. He is also known as a great developer of talent, and that is what a lot of these players need. Caragher brought in the good recruits but he had problems developing them once they got to campus.
Low Expectations: Another big positive of this team is the expectations are low for this team, and they are going to have time to develop.
The coaching staff doesn’t have to rush the development of these players because they know they have their jobs for a few years. They have a lot of good players on the team, but they are young and they need to be developed the right way to have success in the future years.
2017 San Jose State Spartans Predictions: Team Weaknesses
Defensive Struggles: Derrick Odum has taken over as the defensive coordinator for this team, and he has a lot of work to do.
To say this Spartans team was terrible on the defensive side last year would be putting it nicely. They gave up 435 yards and 35 points per game last year.
They need to cut down on that number if they want any chance to improve on the win total from last year.
To cut down on that number they need to start with the guys up front. They need to do better against the run and get some push on opposing offensive lines.
If they could start to wreck some havoc in the back field that would help improve the back end of the defensive some, which could help lower the yards and points given up per game.
San Jose State Spartans Prediction: 5-7
This team is young, and they are going to have a lot of growing pains.
They also play in a Mountain West conference that is tough, and you need to have a good defense to compete in. Even with all the good recruits coming in some will red shirt, and they won’t make that big of impact on the defensvie side to change much from what happened last year.
I think the offense will be fine, but not good enough to make up for 35 points per game. I think they will win four or five games, and miss out on a bowl game again this year.
