2017 Football Preview – Mountain West – Aztecs
Looking for 2017 San Diego State Aztecs Predictions – NCAA Futures, Betting Odds predictions? The Aztecs are coming off back to back 11-3 seasons. Thanks to the loss of their best RB they are expected to take a step back in the Mountain West but my gut is saying that you discount this group at your peril. They are going to be in the conversation of which team is the best outside the Power 5.

The Aztecs are coming into the season without a lot of fanfare. That is exactly how coach Rocky Long likes it.
2017 San Diego State Aztecs Predictions: Team Strengths
Still Pounding: Donnell Pumphrey has been one of the most productive players in NCAA history – more than 2000 yards last season to become the all time leading rusher.
Even though he got the bulk of the carries there was still enough so that Rashad Penny could eclipse 1000 yards in relief. He averaged more than 7 yards per carry.
Penny could easily be a 2K rusher this season as the strategy is unlikely to change much.
Juwan Washington moves to the backup role and the Pumphrey clone will get a lot of carries too. He averaged 8 yards per carry as a frosh last season.
DEFENSE: Rocky Long is one of the best defensive minds in the game and this team will play hard on that side of the ball.
Ronley Lakalaka will become the new linchpin at LB while Noble Hall will anchor the line.
They play a 3-3-5 and three members of the secondary return. If recent past is a predictor of future success at least one of those players is likely to play on Sundays.
2017 San Diego State Aztecs Predictions: Team Weaknesses
O-Line Uncertainty?: I know the Aztecs are going to run but they need their line to be good enough make the team go.
They are replacing four offensive linemen from a year ago and planning to use two frosh and a soph to do it. That might be too much to ask.
TE David Wells is highly thought of and more than big enough to assist in blocking but he is also an important target in the passing game.
CB Kameron Kelly is moving to safety because of a lack of experience at the position. He has size but the senior does not have much experience in that role.
Kelly was second on the team with four interceptions a year ago and the move slots Trenton Thompson to start at safety. He is a Georgia transfer that was very effective for the Dawgs especially near the line of scrimmage.
Hopefully the Aztecs will be able to overcome any continuity issues in the defensive secondary quickly.
San Diego State Aztecs Prediction: 8-4
This is a cood SDSU team but probably not as good as the last couple of seasons.
That being said they are the most likely program to represent the West Division in the MWC. The lighter of the two.
The nonconference has a couple of tough games against PAC (Arizona State and Stanford). A year ago I would have given them a shot at both but this season they will be lucky to split.
Don’t forget about this group if their record is a little fugly early, their final 5 games are very winnable and should catapult them into the MWC title game for a third year in a row.
