Buffalo Bills Betting Odds – NFL Football Futures

Many thought the Bills would use their high draft pick to take a QB, but they passed on doing that and heading into this season Buffalo will hang their hopes on Ryan Fitzpatrick (3,000 yards 23 TD last season).

A look at the numbers:

Last season – 4-12 SU, 8-7-1 ATS
Projection this season – 5-11 (4th AFC East)
Bills Super Bowl XLVI Odds: +15000
Bills 2011/12 AFC Odds +7500
2011/2012 Bills AFC East Lines +1500

Overall, the Bills offense ranked 18th in run offense and 24th in pass offense last season.

Buffalo has some young talent, but with the Jets and Patriots in the AFC East anything near a .500 mark will make this season a major success.

WR Steve Johnson (1,083 receiving yards last season) was a surprise last season, but 2nd leading WR Lee Evans only had 37 catches and since he has a high cap dollar number he may be gone this season.

Roscoe Parrish is a talent and a solid return guy, but he must turn into a #2 WR or teams will constantly double cover Johnson and make things very hard for Fitzpatrick.

RB Fred Jackson is the lead back and he keeps on chugging, but he is no spring chicken any longer and he will need help from 2nd year back C.J. Spiller. Spiller must step up this season since he will be keyed on by opposing defenses and his speed is something that Buffalo has to better utilize this season to take some pressure off Fitzpatrick.

He has pass-catching ability and I expect Spiller to have a breakout season in 2011. The offensive line is young and solid and they have a tall task this season opening up holes for the running game and protecting Fitzpatrick.

Last season the Bills were a Jekyll and Hyde team on defense ranking a solid 3rd against the pass, but dead last against the run. That is exactly why the Bills bypassed taking a QB with the 3rd pick and pounced on DT Marcell Dareus. The Bills used their first 4 picks in the draft to take defensive players. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Rookies Dareus and Alex Carrington, Torell Troup along with Kyle Williams will be counted on to improve a run defense that was terrible last season.

The inside LB duo of Paul Posluszny and Kelvin Sheppard is solid, but the outside is a weakness. The secondary is solid and they are a great unit, but they have to come up with more INT’s and they can do that more this season if the front line guys can get to opposing QB’s. Marcell Dareus is the player the team can build a D around, but the run defense is still a big concern in Buffalo.

Even though the Bills only won 4 games last season they play a pretty tough schedule this season.

Besides facing all the teams from the NFC East they also play at Kansas City and at San Diego not to mention playing division foes New York and New England twice.

HOW IT STANDS NOW

Marcell Dareus was a good pick, but with many legit QB’s available I am not sure the team drafted well. Fitzpatrick gives the team hope, but he needs more receiving weapons. If the Bills can run the ball and are better at stopping the run they will be better, but winning more that 5 games is a stretch.

Season Win Total Prediction: 5
