New York Jets Betting Odds – NFL Football Futures

The Jets made it to the AFC Championship game for the 2nd straight season last season and it will be a tall task for them to do it again.

A look at the numbers:

Last season – 11-5 SU, 9-7 ATS
Projection this season – 10-6 (2nd AFC East)
Jets Super Bowl XLVI Odds: +1200
Jets 2011/12 AFC Odds +500
2011/2012 Jets AFC East Lines +150

While Mark Sanchez showed improvement last season and the running game was solid New York will still be led by their defense.

Sanchez led a pass offense that ranked 22nd in passing yards per game and unlike his rookie season he showed he could carry the team with his arm if they need it. However, one big concern for the Jets is their WR corps.

Last season’s top 2 receivers Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes, who combined for 105 catches, are both free agents and they need to sign at least one and get some more help for Sanchez when free agency begins.

Does RB LaDainian Tomlinson have one more good year in him? LT came back last season to rush for 914 yards with 6 TD and he and Shonn Greene (766 yards 2 TD last season) led New York and their 4th ranked rushing offense. Sanchez is not a game changing QB yet, so these guys need to step up and run the ball well again.

Rookie Bilal Powell and Joe McKnight will give them depth at the RB position.

The offensive line is solid even though the RT position is a concern. The line needs to open up holes for the running game again and if they can do that the Jets will be tough to beat with the talent they have in the backfield as well as their defense. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Ah yes, the Jets’ defense. That is their strength and last season they ranked 6th defending the pass and 3rd defending the run. On the defensive line the Jets may go younger this season with rookie Muhammad Wilkerson and Mike DeVito playing beside Sione Pouha. The LB corps is solid, but is getting older and that is an issue that may need to be addressed when free agency begins.

DE Muhammad Wilkerson may have been a draft steal and he may start right away.

Stud Darrelle Reevis leads a stellar secondary and along with Antonio Cromartie they form one of the best pass defending duos in the league. The S position is decent and as a whole the secondary must play well this season since the Jets play so many teams this upcoming season that have a great passing offense.

The Jets have a tough schedule this season, as besides facing the Patriots twice in the AFC East they face the Cowboys, Ravens, Chargers, Chiefs, Eagles, and Giants.

They can get off to a good start, as their first 3 games are against teams that did not have winning records last season.

HOW IT STANDS NOW

The Jets have the talent on both sides of the ball and with the defense they have they will always have a chance. I can see the Jets winning 10 games, but they will have to snag the Wild Card with the Patriots winning the division. Still, if they get some WR help, the RB’s produce again, and the defense plays like last season the Jets have a legit shot to go all the way.
