Miami Dolphins Betting Odds – NFL Football Futures

Is Chad Henne the answer for the Dolphins at QB? He had an up and down season last year and there have been rumblings that the fish may go out and get a QB when free agency begins and Vince Young is a player being mentioned.

A look at the numbers:

Last season – 7-9 SU, 8-8 ATS
Projection this season – 8-8 (3rd AFC East)
Dolphins Super Bowl XLVI Odds: +1200
Dolphins 2011/12 AFC Odds +2000
2011/2012 Dolphins AFC East Lines +4000

Henne had over 3,300 passing yards and 15 TD last season, but he was also picked off 19 times.

The Dolphins’ defense was solid last season and if they can get some good QB play Miami may surprise a lot of people and make the playoffs.

The RB duo of Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams combined for 1,407 rushing yards last season and since Williams is in the twilight of his career the team drafted RB Daniel Thomas in the 2nd round. Overall, the Dolphins had the leagues 21st ranked rushing offense last season and they need to improve upon that this season, especially if Henne is the starting QB.

WR Brandon Marshall had over 1,000 yards receiving last season, but a legit #2 WR has to step up. Brian Hartline is a nice deep threat, but he has problems dropping balls.

4th round pick Edmond Gates should help the WR corps, but the fish may want to hit the free agency market in order to upgrade their passing offense.

OT Jake Long leads a solid offensive line that may be better this season with the addition of first round draft pick OT Mike Pouncey. The line has to really perform is Henne is the QB, as he is not the most mobile QB, which is why Vince Young may be a good fit in South Beach. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Miami quietly had a good last season ranking 8th defending the pass and 7th defending the run. The defensive line has to stay healthy and if they can do that their D may improve this season with Randy Starks leading the way with one of the best NT in the league in Paul Soliai.

LB’s Cameron Wake and Karlos Dansby are good up front, but the LB unit is not a deep one, which is a concern for the Dolphins heading into the season.

DB Vontae Davis has shown flashes of brilliance and he may have a breakout season in 2011. If he can do that the Dolphins may have a great pass defense, as SS Sean Smith is strong against the pass and the run and FS’s Reshad Jones and Chris Clemons are both capable of making big plays.

The schedule is not a killer one for the Dolphins, but it aint easy either. The fish have to win games they should as well as a couple where they will be the dogs.

HOW IT STANDS NOW

The Dolphins have some young talent at the team, especially on defense, but when the QB and RB positions are an issue it does not bode well for a big season.

I think Miami will be around .500, but if they can run the ball and they pick up a good QB in free agency the Dolphins have a chance to make it to the playoffs, albeit a small one.
