Turns out that last year’s fast start (4-0 and 5-1) was just fool’s gold. Now the Bills go from fool’s gold to just fools, as the Terrell Owens Show opens in a few months. Buffalo actually might be a good landing spot for Owens, who thrives on being the focal point.

All eyes will be on the relationship between Owens and QB Trent Edwards, but Edwards has some demons of his own to slay after the Bills went 2-8 down the stretch, flaming out after a 4-0 start. betED An early-season concussion and late-season groin injury limited his development, and the fact that the ground game was only average didn’t help.

Owens (38 TDs in his three seasons in Denver) should limit double-teams on wideout Lee Evans, and T.O. has always played well in his first year with a new team.

The Bills can be an upper-echelon defensive team, especially if first-round draft choice Aaron Maybin improves the D line. But Buffalo has found that progress is slow in the tough AFC East.

Surprising stat: The four teams Buffalo defeated at the start of the 2008 season (Seattle, Jacksonville, Oakland and St. Louis) finished the season with a combined 16-48 record. None of the Bills’ 7 victories came against teams that finished with winning records.

Team strengths: The defensive line could be very good, especially if Aaron Schobel is fully recovered from a foot injury. Marcus Stroud was a steal, and was superb last season.

Team Weakness: This is a team in serious need of an identity, and the Bills chose to go all-in by bringing in Owens. Coming off three straight 7-9 seasons, they figured there wasn’t much to lose in signing Owens to a 1-year deal. This smells a lot like the Pistons brining in Allen Iverson. Guessing here is that Owens is not on Buffalo’s 2010 roster. The Bills lost 15 fumbles last season, more than any other team. That can’t continue.

The real over/under for this team will be how many games before we see T.O. yelling at Edwards on the sidelines. My guess will be 6 on that one.

With T.O., no matter how good it gets, it will always end badly.
