Mike Singletary begins his first full season on the job as head coach after leading the Niners to wins in 5 of the last 9 games last season. Former No. 1 overall pick Alex Smith returns after sitting out all of 2008 with a shoulder injury, and SF appears ready to give him one (last?) chance to win the job. Shaun Hill (7-3 as a starter last season) and Smith will probably take it down to the third exhibition before Singletary decides.

Sensing an opening in the up-for-grabs NFC West, the 49ers made some interesting additions. Veteran Demetric Evans helps bolster the defensive line, and the O line should be better (it would be hard to be much worse) with Marvel Smith on board. betED Frank Gore is a Top-10 running back when he’s on his game, but the first order of business for the offense is keeping Hill or Smith upright – 49er QBs were sacked 55 times last season.

If the QB isn’t running for his life, the Niners should move the ball. And if Arizona’s Anquan Boldin is traded or pouts for the entire season, SF could have the best WR group in the division (Isaac Brice, Josh Morgan and rookie Michael Crabtree).

TE Vernon Davis has moaned about not getting enough balls his way; if that continues to be the case, he might be gone. Singletary won’t want to hear it.

Surprising stat: Frank Gore fumbled 6 times in 240 carriers last season and has lost the ball 18 times in four seasons. Rookie RBs Glenn Coffee and Kory Sheets also have reps for putting the ball on the ground.

Team strengths: It’s a little hard to get a handle on the offense, which could be very good. Word out of the West Coast is that Hill will likely be the QB starter, and if he can stay healthy and replicate last year’s numbers, the Niners could make a move in the division. Joe Staley is one of the best O linemen in the NFC.

Team Weakness: Keep an eye on the secondary. Walt Harris is out with a torn ACL, with Dre Bly immediately signed to replace him. Nate Clements is among the best in the league, but after that it’s pretty slim pickings. No defensive backs were taken in the draft.

you stated in your ‘San Francisco 49ers 2009 NFL Football Future Lines that the team did not take DB. Round 7 – Curtis Taylor from LSU. Come on guys, its called basic research. Also, you might have wanted to mention that Mark Roman (who hasn’t had an INT in 2 years) is beingh replaced

Nice job reader….brain lock here. But if a 7th-round gets gets significant playing time, it’s not a good sign. I’m a Pats fan, and NE’s secondary has been ravaged in recent years. Depth is important.

About the 49ers — they should have a little better than a puncher’s chance in the West, especially if the Cardinals start slow, but they may be a year away. I really like the coach.

I like the mind set that Mike Singletary brings to this team. It is amazing how much production you can squeeze out of average players if they are properly motivated.

Mike Singletary will be entering his first full season as head coach for the 49ers. He has earned the respect of the team and has them on the right track towards becoming a playoff caliber team. This team’s biggest question mark is who will be the starting QB when the season begins. Will it be Shaun Hill or former No.1 draft pick Alex Smith? Draft pick WR Michael Crabtree addresses some concern they had at that position. San Francisco will be a contender in 2009 but will lose some close games that will ruin their chances at the division title and a lengthy post-season. They will post an 8-8 finish.
