It didn’t take long for the bad blood to really get going in the Sabres/Flyers series. After the Sabres evened the series at 2-2 with a 1-0 victory in Game 4, the Flyers took exception to the officiating. Mike Richards, who was called on a five-minute elbowing major for what looked like a love tap on Patrick Kaleta, said the Sabres were getting away with murder. Sabres coach Lindy Ruff called the Flyers whiners and pointed out the boatload of power plays Philly got at home early in the series.

There’s no love lost between these two teams entering Game 5. Though it looks like Jeff Carter won’t suit up for the Flyers after injuring his knee in Game 4, Philly should get a big boost with Chris Pronger likely to return from his lengthy absence tonight. It could provide the Flyers with a major momentum shift in an emotional series.

Though Philadelphia couldn’t beat Ryan Miller in Game 4, that was to be expected; Miller is simply too good not to bounce back after allowing nine goals between Games 2 and 3. So I don’t think Philadelphia will be too spooked by the shutout – especially with the series shifting back to the Wells Fargo Center, where Miller allowed five goals in his last visit.

Another favorable development for the Flyers is that their goaltending seems to have stabilized. Brian Boucher isn’t the second coming of Bernie Parent but he’s been far more reliable than Sergei Bobrovsky. Boucher has a 1.45 goals against average and has stopped 83 of 87 Sabre shots (.954) over two and a half games.

The conditions seem right for the Flyers to strike back tonight. Even though they’ll never publicly (or even consciously) admit it, the referees are due to give the Flyers some calls, so I’d expect the Philly to get a fair share of power plays. With Pronger back on the blueline to run things with the man advantage, I think the Flyers will capitalize.

Look for the series to keep getting uglier, chippier and mouthier as the Flyers rebound at home in Game 5.

Flyers vs Sabres prediction: Flyers 4, Sabres 2
Money Line: Flyers -160
Spread: Flyers -1.5
Over/Under: OVER 5.5
