Colorado is tied with Detroit at 3.4 goals per game – the highest mark in the NHL. Even with Chris Stewart out due to a broken hand, the Avs’ offense hasn’t missed a beat. Milan Hejduk has turned back the clock, notching 30 points in 27 games. John-Michael Liles is having a career year on the back end and Matt Duchene, not surprisingly, is blossoming into a point-per-game player. Paul Stastny remains one of the game’s most underrated playmaking centers.

The biggest surprise for Colorado this season has been Kevin Shattenkirk. The rookie defenseman is playing 20 minutes a night and has 14 points in 16 games.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that the Avs have sacrificed a lot of defense for offense. They allow well over three goals per game, they’ve gotten shaky goaltending from Craig Anderson and Peter Budaj, and they’ve lost four straight games.

Their first loss in that skid came at home to the same team they face on the road Friday night: the Atlanta Thrashers.

Aside from Pittsburgh, there isn’t a hotter team in the NHL than Atlanta right now. The Thrashers have won eight of their last nine. On the strength of stellar goaltending from Ondrej Pavelec, they’ve allowed two goals or fewer in all of those wins. Chicago Blackhawks imports Andrew Ladd and Dustin Byfuglien have taken this team on their shoulders and turned them into a winner.

I expect the Atlanta freight train to run through Colorado on Friday night.
