The Baltimore Orioles will be looking to get back to their 2012 form in which they won an astounding 93 games with what was, on paper, an average team.

With the 2013 MLB season in the books, it time to peer into our crystal balls to see which team may emerge and become next year`s Boston Red Sox. The two favorites to claim the crown next year each made strong bids this year only to lose in six games in their respective League Championship Series.
Major League Baseball’s trade deadline has come and gone. While that doesn’t necessarily mean that there won’t be any more trades the rest of the season, it does give us an idea of which general managers think their teams are out of the playoff picture, and which ones expect their teams to make a run in the postseason.
There isn’t a team in the game employing a four-man rotation at the moment, which means that each week, each team will send out five different starting pitchers. That’s five players from each of Major League Baseball’s 30 teams, meaning that at least 150 different names will hit the betting board in a given week.
It was Dickens who penned the line “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” and for our purposes I’ll use that as a way of leading into this week’s Trend Report, one which focuses on teammates that are trending in opposite directions.
You’ve surely heard it many times before: The baseball season is a marathon, not a sprint. As the third month of play comes to an end and we near the midway point of the season, let’s re-evaluate some names we see on the betting board every fifth day, while noting a few that may have been overlooked.
Here are three starting pitchers worth backing, and three you’re going to want to fade.
The mountains of data offered to fans can sometimes be intimidating, but once in a while a gem appears that can help us to make sense of what we can expect to see out on the diamond.
The Yankees beat the Diamondbacks in Game 1 of this interleague series and they have won 2 straight overall.
Today’s game is the rubber match in this series with these teams splitting the first 2 games. The Blue Jays had high hopes coming into this season, but they are only 3-5 and their pitching and offense have both struggled.
The Reds stumbled a bit on offense last season after having a great season at the plate the previous season and one of the issues was at the leadoff spot. They really addressed that need brining in Shin-Soo Choo, who batted .310 and had an on-base-percentage of .389 last season.
The Pirates looked great in the first half of last season, but they went through a major 2nd half collapse. At the beginning of August they were 16 games above .500, but then the bottom fell out and they ended up with yet another losing season.
The Cardinals played well last season and their offense did not miss a beat even with the departure of Albert Pujols. They made the playoffs, beat the Braves in the Wild Card round, and lost to the eventual champion Giants in the NL championship.
The Cubs ranked 28th in the league in runs scored last season and while they have young talent they need to be much better than last season to have any chance to contend this season. Soriano had a great season with over 30 HR and 100 RBI, but no other player had more than 15 HR.
The Minnesota Twins are usually in the hunt but they have fallen on hard times the last few seasons. Their 2012 lineup had a few nice surprises but the pitching was absolutely miserable.
The Royals have been mired in sub-mediocrity for some time now. They have been trying to get out of it through the draft and prospect development but not enough of their young talent have become solid contributors, let alone the stars they were hoping for.
The White Sox were a legitimate threat to Detroit in the AL Central last year, using a top 10 offense to a better than .500 record. They are the most likely challenger to the Tigers again this season, thought a Wild Card birth is the more reasonable goal.
