It’s Super Bowl XLV Predictions Time! What makes this game so difficult to handicap is not the differences between the two sides involved but because of the similarities between the two squads. The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers are the two best defenses in the game, they are both led by quarterbacks that were a product of the 2004 draft and both have utilized strong drafts to get to where they are today – Super Bowl contenders!

The Pittsburgh Steelers have become one of the most dominant teams of the last decade and despite being slight underdogs ahead of Sunday’s game, a close look at their roster reveals five good reasons that they should prevail in the Big Game.

1. Experience

On the biggest stage possible, there are bound to be some jitters and some inexplicable nerves. The fact is that Aaron Rodgers has never experienced anything close to the pressure of a one-game-take-everything scenario. For all but two roster players on the Packers, this is a completely new experience. Coach Mike McCarthy will have his hands full calming his team and focusing them amidst the biggest spectacle in American sports.

On the flip side, Ben Roethlisberger already has two rings along with Troy Polamalu, James Harrison, and Brett Keisel. Coach Mike Tomlin has already guided his team to Football’s Holy Grail.  Add it up and the coaching staff, both lines, the leader of the offense and the leader of the defense have all experienced what it takes to be crowned champions of the world!

2. Coaching

As already mentioned, Mike Tomlin and his defensive coordinator both have experience in the Biggest Game and both are considered among the best at their craft. The Steelers staff has dealt with pressure for the better part of the past decade. Nobody has played more tight, critical games than the Pittsburgh Steelers over the past few years. They are battle tested and have proven their affinity of making the exact right call at exactly the right time.

3. Ben Roethlisberger

Big Ben may not win a Nobel Peace Prize but he has certainly shown that he is capable of winning football games when it counts. He has a 10-2 career record in the playoffs and will be going for his third ring. He is as tough as they come and has an insane ability to will his team to victory when it counts the most. He possesses size, strength, smarts and an incredible ability to improvise on the fly. He is simply one of the three best Big Game quarterbacks of a generation. Nothing phases Roethlisberger and not a broken nose nor a broken ankle can slow him down.

4. Defense

Duh!! No defense has been better this season. They dominated the regular season and were the sole reason that the Steelers emerged 3-1 after Ben’s suspension. The Packers have played some tough defenses including the Bears in the NFC Championship game but these Steelers are a totally different challenge.

Pittsburgh only gave up 22 points twice all season long and in the playoffs so far, against two of the best teams in the AFC, they game up a total of 43 points. The Ravens and the Jets gained a combined 400 yards against Dick Lebeau’s squad while turning the ball over four times allowing seven sacks and one defensive touchdown.

5. Aaron Rodgers

I know what you are thinking – Rodgers is the reason that the Packers could win this game. But consider Rodgers’ concussion history and the pounding that he is likely to take on Sunday and realize that there is a small small chance that Matt Flynn could see some time – just sayin’! After seeing Rodgers rocked by Julius Peppers last week, I for one thought that his season was done.

Don’t think that the Steelers defense isn’t acutely aware of the concussion issues!

Even if Rodgers plays the whole game, it will be impossible for the Packers to win if their quarterback isn’t absolutely their best player. Against Chicago in the NFC Title game, Rodgers was 17 for 30 passing, had a 55.2 passer rating and threw two picks – hardly inspiring!
