Sports News – NBA news: Derrick Rose to be named MVP, also day to day with ankle injury; Playoff record for James Jones; Nene to opt out of contract?

Derrick Rose to be named MVP

Derrick Rose will become the youngest player ever to win the NBA MVP award this week. The 22-year-old averaged 25 points, 7.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game this season, leading the Bulls to a 62-20 record. He became the fifth player in league history to tally 2,000 points, 600 assists and 300 rebounds in the same season, joining Michael Jordan, Oscar Robertson, LeBron James and John Havlicek.

Rose will receive the award from commissioner David Stern prior to Game 2 of the Bulls-Hawks Eastern Conference semifinal – but will he be in uniform? Rose is day to day after aggravating his ankle injury in Game 1. He didn’t require an MRI and still has a shot to play Wednesday.

Miami Heat forward James Jones set an obscure NBA postseason record over the weekend. During Sunday’s win over Boston, Jones scored a record 25 points without attempting a two-point shot. He made five of seven three-point attempts and was 10 of 11 from the line.

Will Nene opt out of his contract with the Denver Nuggets and join Kenyon Martin in free agency? The 28-year-old center is entering the final season of a six-year, $60-million deal. He averaged 14.5 points and 7.6 rebounds this past season.

MLB news: Ryan Zimmerman has abdominal surgery; Andre Ethier extends hitting streak; Feliz wants to remain a closer forever; Top Mets prospect tears MCL

The Washington Nationals’ top hitter, third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, has only played eight games so far in 2011 and won’t be back in the lineup for another six weeks. He had surgery today to repair his torn abdominal muscle. He’s been on the DL since April 9.

Andre Ethier extended his hitting streak last night with an infield single in the fifth inning off James Russell of the Chicago Cubs. Either is now batting .377 with three homers and 17 RBI for the Dodgers on the year.

Even if the Texas Rangers decide they want to make Neftali Feliz a starting pitcher after all – he may just shake his head “no.” The 2010 AL Rookie of the Year said his arm “didn’t feel good” after Texas stretched him out as a starter in spring training, then moved him back to the closer role. He “doesn’t want to go through that again” and said that “God willing I’ll remain a closer for the rest of my career.”

Jenrry Meija, the New York Mets’ top pitching prospect, tore the MCL in his right elbow during a Triple-A start on Friday night. It’s more than likely that he’ll miss the rest of the season and will require major surgery.

NHL news: Kubina, Gagne to miss Game 3 in Tampa; Devils courting Ken Hitchcock

The Tampa Bay Lightning head home hoping to extend their series lead to 3-0 over the Washington Capitals tonight but will try to do it without two key contributors. Pavel Kubina and Simon Gagne both suffered head injuries in Game 1 after taking big hits from Jason Chimera and Scott Hannan, respectively. They missed Game 2 and won’t suit up tonight.

The New Jersey Devils need a head coach replacement for the retiring Jacques Lemaire and general manager Lou Lamoriello thinks he has his man. Reportedly, the Devils are pursuing Ken Hitchcock. He’s currently coaching Team Canada at the World Championships and won the Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars in 199 before moving on to Philadelphia and Columbus.

NFL news: Mendenhall shocks with Bin Laden tweets; Eagles offered a No. 1 pick for Kolb

The Pittsburgh Steelers are dumbfounded after running back Rashard Mendenhall made some bizarre tweets following Osama Bin Laden’s death. On Monday, he asked, “What kind of person celebrates death? It’s amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak.” He added that “I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style.”

The Philadelphia Eagles have reportedly been offered a first-round pick plus another selection for Kevin Kolb. The Eagles likely would’ve traded their backup quarterback at the draft had the labor impasse not prevented it.
