Tuesday Water Cooler – April 20th, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter Sports Picks and topics…well, basically all the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

Nothing Earth-shattering in the sports world over the last 24 hours but, hey, that just means we get to dig more for fun tidbits. We’ll start things off with an NFL trade.

NFL news: Scheffler to Lions in three-team trade

Well, that does it. Now every Denver Bronco who requested a trade last year has been successfully shipped out of town. First it was Jay Cutler a year ago; then it was Brandon Marshall last week. Finally, Denver sent tight end Tony Scheffler to the Detroit Lions in a three-team trade yesterday. Sorry, Brandon Pettigrew.

In the deal, The Philadelphia Eagles received linebacker Ernie Sims, a former first-rounder and interesting reclamation project. Who knows what leaving Detroit can do to a player’s psyche? Never underestimate the power of joy. Denver also got a fifth-round pick from Philly and the Eagles sent a seventh-rounder to the Lions.

Draft update: USC tight end Anthony McCoy, projected to be a second or third-rounder this year, tested positive for marijuana at the scouting combine according to a report issued by FoxSports.com yesterday. Wonder if anyone misread the headline and gave Colt or Gerald a call?

NBA news: Backlash against Kevin Garnett after elbowing incident

Opposing NBA big men aren’t warming up to Kevin Garnett any time soon. After K.G. drew a one-game suspension for elbowing Quentin Richardson in Game 1 of the Celtics-Heat series, reaction around the league wasn’t pretty. Andrew Bogut Tweeted, “Geee I wonder who started the little scuffle in the Miami Boston game hmmm?’

Joakim Noah called Garnett a dirty player. K.G. responded while addressing media yesterday: “Tell Joakim Noah to keep it in Cleveland…and worry about Shaq.”

Golf news: Tiger’s mistress to star in reality show

The apocalypse moved one step closer yesterday. Two notorious celebrity mistresses, Michelle McGee and Jamie Jungers, are set to appear in Celebrity Cheaters, a reality show that aims to catch celebrities in extramarital affairs. McGee was at the heart of the Sandra Bullock/Jesse James scandal while Jungers, of course, is one of Tiger Woods’ famed mistresses.

Let’s just hope the show doesn’t premiere the same week as any major championship. Tiger needs to focus!

UFC news: Dana White gives Anderson Silva ultimatum

After Anderson Silva’s strange, clowning display during the middleweight championship bout at UFC 112, in which he didn’t throw a punch for the final three rounds, commissioner Dana White was so furious that he didn’t even stay to watch the final round.

White’s fury hasn’t died down one bit. He’s given the champ an ultimatum: fight a real fight in his next challenge, against No. 1 contender Chael Sonnen, or get the boot.

If Anderson Silva puts on another circus act, Dana White will cut the middleweight champion from the promotion entirely.

NHL news: Heatley expected to play in Game 4

Quick injury update: Dany Heatley, who missed Game 3 of the Western Conference quarter-final with a mysterious “upper-body injury,” looks like he’ll play for San Jose tonight against Colorado.

The Sharks certainly need the 39-goal scorer. They couldn’t put one past Craig Anderson in Game 3 despite 51 shots on goal.

Only Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle managed a goal – past his own goalie, Evgeni Nabokov, to give Colorado the gift victory in overtime.

Hurry back, Dany.
