South Korea vs. Uruguay Odds
Uruguay: Spread: – ½ (-115): Moneyline: -130
South Korea: Spread: + ½ (-105): Moneyline: +350
Total: 2
26 Jun 10:00am (ET)
Uruguay easily qualified with their only sub-par effort being their 0-0 draw with France. They beat Mexico and that is good enough for me to think that they will advance.
South Korea made the semis in 2002 but this year they gave up six goals in the Group Stage. They have issues on defense making their prospects for advancement sketchy at best.
Pick: Uruguay
Ghana vs. USA Odds
United States: Spread: pk -125: Moneyline: +150
Ghana: Spread: pk 105: Moneyline: +190
Total: 2
26 Jun 2:30pm (ET)
The United States snuck into the Round of 16 and avoided a match with Germany. The US will be happy to have Ghana on the schedule. The Americans are a solid side and should advance past Ghana.
No Michael Essien is a big problem for Ghana. Ghana showed flashes in the Group Stage especially against Germany but the Americans will be too much to handle.
Pick: United States
England vs. Germany Odds
Germany: Spread: pk 100: Moneyline: +180
England: Spread: pk -120: Moneyline: +165
Total: 2
27 Jun 10:00am (ET)
Germany will have Miroslav Klose return from suspension but Schweinsteiger is doubtful with an injury. A loss to Serbia in the Group stage has people wondering about this team. If Schweinsteiger plays, Germany’s chances improve. If he doesn’t Germany will be in some trouble.
England has not looked dominant but did what they had to do. The English are a talented side that will be uber-motivated to win. They are healthy and will have their whole roster available in this game.
Pick: England – possibly after Penalty Kicks
Mexico vs. Argentina Odds
Argentina: Spread: -1 (-115): Moneyline: -200
Mexico: Spread: +1 (-105): Moneyline: +600
Total: 2.5
27 Jun 2:30pm (ET)
Argentina has looked good winning their Group with 9 points. Maradonna will have a complete side with Jonas Gutierrez returning from suspension and his first tier returning after a rest against Greece.
Mexico has been so-so with a win over France and draws against South Africa and Uruguay. They have not exactly been dominant and only a dominant side has a chance against Argentina.
Pick: Argentina
Slovakia vs. Netherlands Odds
Netherlands: Spread: -1 (-125): Moneyline: -225
Slovakia: Spread: +1 (105): Moneyline: +650
Total: 2
28 Jun 10:00am (ET)
The Dutch won all three of their Group Stage games. Victories over Denmark, Japan and Cameroon have made the Netherlands a team to look out for. A match against Slovakia is exactly what the doctor ordered. Robben was able to get into their final group game and looked good. That bodes well for the Dutch.
Slovakia is one of the few improbable Round of 16 teams. A win in their final game against Italy put them here. A draw with the Kiwis and a drubbing at the hands of Paraguay doesn’t instill a whole lot of confidence.
Pick: Netherlands
Chile vs. Brazil Odds
Brazil: Spread: -1 (-105): Moneyline: -225
Chile: Spread: +1 (-115): Moneyline: +550
Total: 2
28 Jun 2:30pm (ET)
Brazil is the overwhelming favorites to win it all coming out of the Group stage. Wins over North Korea and Ivory Coast were predictable but the 0-0 draw with Portugal was not. Brazil is head and shoulders above every team except for maybe Spain and shouldn’t have any trouble with Chile.
Chile started the World Cup with two straight 1-0 wins over Honduras and Switzerland. A 2-1 loss to Spain was an expected result. The trouble for Chile is that Marco Estrada will be suspended for the match. He wouldn’t have made a difference anyway.
Pick: Brazil
Japan vs. Paraguay Odds
Paraguay: Spread: – ½ (110): Moneyline: +110
Japan: Spread: + ½ (-130): Moneyline: +280
Total: 2
29 Jun 10:00am (ET)
Paraguay started the World Cup in style but ended the Group stage with a less than inspiring performance. A draw against Italy and a convincing win over Slovakia opened some eyes but a dull 0-0 draw with New Zealand raised some concerns. They have shown good form so far and should do well against the upstart Japanese.
Japan is the surprise of the World Cup so far. An opening win over Cameroon and a tight loss to Netherlands showed that this team came to play. A 3-1 victory over Denmark was further proof. They are a cohesive side but they are not quite “prime time” yet.
Pick: Paraguay
Portugal vs. Spain Odds
Spain: Spread: – ½ (-110): Moneyline: -110
Portugal: Spread: + ½ (-110): Moneyline: +300
Total: 2
29 Jun 2:30pm (ET)
Spain gave the Soccer world a scare when they fell 1-0 to Switzerland in their opening game. Spain’s second game against Honduras was much better. They needed a win in their final game with Chile to advance. They did – Spain appears to be back on track and living up to their favorite status.
Portugal looked good in the Group stage. A 0-0 draw against the Ivory Coast was an exciting match in which the Portuguese perhaps deserved a better result. A 7-0 drubbing of North Korea followed setting up a letdown 0-0 draw with Brazil. Portugal is better than advertised but they are not miracle workers.
Pick: Spain
