Overall number one seeded Spain will finally make their long awaited to begin their campaign to dominate the 2010 World Cup.

Their opponents, Switzerland, will also be looking to go through from this group, which contains strong competition from Chile as well as rank outsiders Honduras.

The two teams haven’t played each other since back in 1994, when Spain dismantled Switzerland 3-0 in a previous World Cup meeting.

Spain comes in to the group having dominated Europe and running like a well oiled, finely tuned machine. Unlike some of the other favorites, they have avoided any major injuries and setbacks and seem set for the long haul. This is a side that gets better every time you see them.

Since the UEFA EURO 2008 victory, the team further developed its talent base and tactical abilities under the watchful eye of Supremo Vicente del Bosque.

Their traditional one-touch style places a tremendous demand on the midfielders and can only work with the highest quality players, such as captain and keeper Iker Casillas, midfielder Xavi Hernandez, Golden Boot contender David Villa and Liverpool striker Fernando ‘El Niño’ Torres. The results are a nearly uncontainable playing style.

They have shown the ability to overcome adversity while maintaining team spirit. One should fully expect Spain to be there till the end, with the Swiss being nothing more than a speed bump.

After a terrible start and a draw to Israel, Switzerland regrouped and rolled to five straight wins.

Now they make their ninth World Cup appearance led by German super coach Ottmar, “der General” Hitzfeld. In 2006 they reached the quarterfinals, but were eventually eliminated by the Ukraine on penalties and then followed up with a disappointing 2008 UEFA campaign. There is a combination of youth and experience.

Team captain and striker Alexander Frei is the country’s all time goal scorer and main star. Both he and striker Blaise N’Kufo had five goals during qualifying. The squad is rounded out with some of the world’s most talented young players, Eren Derdiyok, Tranquillo Barnetta and keeper Diego Benaglio. This all adds up to a steady but unspectacular squad, which seems to fear contact. Something LA Roja will give them.

With the goal scoring ability of Villa and Torres, Spain could potentially be looked at to win by a number of goals in this game.

La Roja will want to start their campaign off well, grabbing three points before their match against Chile, which for them will be the trickiest in the group round.
