Both South Korea and Greece have a history of being tournament dark horses after the Taeguk Warriors impressive performance in the 2002 World Cup, and Greece’s coming from seemingly nowhere to win Euro 2004. Now the two will square off against each other in the first match of a very diversified Group B.

This will be the second meeting between these two teams, as Korea won 1-0 back in a 2006 meeting.

The Warriors were the first team to represent Asia at FIFA in 1954, but then were not to be seen again until their second appearance in Mexico in 1986.

Now they ride a string of seven consecutive world finals. They will arrive full of confidence and without fear, having come through qualifying with an unbeaten record, including a stunner against the Ivory Coast in March–possibly the best of the African teams.

Midfielder Park Ji-Sung, who played a large role in the two previous campaigns, captains the squad along with Park Chu-Young who ill seize the opportunity to redeem himself after a poor performance in 2006.

Coach Huh Jung-Moo will look to match technique with the team’s high-energy style and flawless technical ability as they take on the small island team.

The Galanoleyki’s makes only their second finals appearance, the first being at USA 1994; an embarrassment, which saw them fail to net a single goal in three losses. Under coach German director Otto Rehhagel, who is known to be a great motivator and talent scout, Greece is no longer the pushovers of before, reaching this point with a 2-1 win against Luxembourg.

They shocked Europe by winning the European Championships in 2004 and matched well against a strong Ukraine in the playoffs to reach the finals. It’s a solid defensive team anchored by skipper Giorgos Karagounis in midfield. Look out for defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Theofanis Gekas – the top scorer in European Zone qualifying, and Angelos Charisteas.

The Greeks will play a style in opposition to Koreas, looking to grind them down and play strong defensively. If Rehhagel can work another miracle with the limited resources, it will be a dangerous and tight team.

This game really is difficult to call, with the styles of these teams very different but expectations for them comparable.

This match could easily end up in a draw, but it seems unlikely that it will be goalless given the quality of some of the goal scorers in the mix.
