World Cup Fixture Odds: Japan +260 / Cameroon +105 / Draw +220

As third favorite to be the top African team in the tournament after the Ivory Coast and Ghana, Cameroon will be expected to win this fixture. The Indomitable Lions have done fairly well in previous international tournaments, though they were disappointed to go out in the quarterfinals of the African Cup of Nations to eventual winners Egypt.

Japan is second favorite after Australia to be the top Asia/Oceania group, above South Korea. The teams have played once before in 2007, when Japan won a friendly match 2-0.

The Samurai Blue is incorrectly regarded as one of the weakest teams in the tourney with low expectations.

Truth be told, they are one of the strongest squads in Asian football — winners of three of the last five editions of the AFC Asian Cup and making their fourth appearance in a World Cup. Takeshi Okada provides strategies with a military precision, and has said on record that those strategies will not change now; they were formulated with the end goal in mind- the 2010 World Cup.

Using primarily a 4-4-2 formation, Shinseki Nakamura will provide the creativity to those strategies to make them work. Midfielder Keisuke Honda and Yasuhito Endo along with Captain Yuji Nakazawa will provide the set up.

After winning four games in Group 1, they may not be the best here, but could play the spoiler role and surprise an unsuspecting Cameroon.

After missing out in 2006, once again people believe in Indomitable Lions. Starting off their qualifying campaign a little shaky, they soon turned it around and won four consecutive contests to reach South Africa, including their 2-0 clincher in Morocco.

They are one the best of the African teams, and will be one of the fiercest competitors in play; they are a threat in nearly every aspect of the game.

After Paul Le Guen made the controversial decision to make Samuel Eto captain, the Inter Milan striker proved his ability with nine goals in 11 qualifiers, to lead the squad.

They will be a threat on the counter attack and will batter opponents into submission with sheer physical power. Since they play with a certain brutish abandonment, that lack of cohesion would be the weakness to exploit.

Cameroon looks like they should emerge as the winners here. With the African climate working in their favor and hopefully plenty of support, the Lions should have what it takes to take away the full three points from their first game.
