After being the last side to reach the World Cup finals, Uruguay’s hopes of being the last to leave the World Cup finals were dashed as it will now find itself locked in a fierce encounter with Germany, who after concluding a dominating run right through the quarterfinals, must now settle for a third place best finish.

The two sides have met eight times, with Germany wining six and drawing two, including a match for third place in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, where the Germans came away with a 1-0 victory on Wolfgang Overath’s 26th minute goal.

Despite tying the game at one in the first half, a final goal in stoppage time was not enough as Uruguay’s dreams of reaching their first World Cup final in 60 years were crushed on Tuesday after their 3-2 defeat to Holland.

Striker Diego Forlan turned in a career-best performance registering his fourth goal of the tournament, but was substituted with eight minutes remaining complaining of discomfort in his thigh.

The Atletico Madrid forward is still in the hunt to claim this year’s Golden Boot Award, and he and his teammates remains hopeful of a fit return for Saturday’s third-place playoff against the Germans. Sportsbook.com

It won’t be an easy task against a disappointed and bitter German side that will undoubtedly be prepared to unleash their anger over their bitter 1-0 semifinal loss to Spain on La Celeste.

Minus 20-year old striker Thomas Mueller, who was suspended after picking up his second yellow card in the quarterfinal win over Argentina, Die Mannschaft seemed to lack the overall attacking thrust that sank England and Argentina, which they beat 4-1 and 4-0, respectively.

However, Mueller’s absence and a cautious defensive posture were not the only factors in Germany’s defeat.

Striker Miroslav Klose, who remains one goal shy of Ronaldo’s 15-goal World Cup record, was silenced by the Spanish defense, as well as the Prince of Cologne Lukas Podolski.

Now German coach Joachim Loew will need to rally his squad and try to retool a game plan that will unleash the scoring machine of recent matches on the Uruguayans. With the return of Mueller, he will have all the necessary weapons to do so.

Meanwhile, Uruguay whose unyielding defense aided them to three consecutive clean sheets in the group round, must stay focused on the task at hand, and despite the end result feel good about making it further than South American giants Brazil and Argentina — even if they controversially knocked Ghana out of the 2010 World Cup on penalties in the quarterfinal.

Uruguay will welcome back striker Luis Suarez returning after that controversial handball on the line against Ghana.

The Ajax forward will be expected to help the squad by adding to his tally of three goals scored in South Africa this summer.

Will the Germans score four goals for the fourth time in this tournament? It’s possible, but they will need to regain the swagger and confidence they seemed to be unable to find against the Spaniards.

Expect an all out offensive assault as the Germans get back to what they do best –score goals– and win this one by a pair.
