Here is rundown of the top 10 players who should find themselves in the chase for the crown of the king of goal scorers in this year’s FIFA World Cup 2010.

1. Lionel Messi—Argentina +900

At 5’ 7”, “the Flea” as he is known, is the probably the best player on perhaps the best team in the 2010 World Cup. The 22-year-old might even be the best player in the tournament. Despite scoring just 13 goals in 44 games for his national team, Messi has proven his goal scoring capabilities by netting 86 goals over six seasons with FC Barcelona. For that reason alone, Messi is my pick to win the Golden Boot at this year’s World Cup.

2. David Villa—Spain +800

Villa is a consistent finisher The 28-year-old Spanish forward is a born goal scorer and is a versatile player who can perform out wide, in behind the forwards or as a lone striker. He has scored a remarkable 36 goals in just 55 matches. With his clever movement, excellent touch and deadly aim, Villa will be a serious contender for the Golden Boot if Spain’s run goes as deep as expected.

3. Wayne Rooney—England +1000

Powerful and strong on the ball, Rooney’s ability to pass, and shoot from distance makes him is the best player on an English squad.  The 24-year old has 25 goals in 58 games for the Three Lions, and should add several goals to his total depending upon how far his side can go in the tournament. While he has been accused of failing to control his temper, Rooney remains one of the most important players for England.

4. Fernando Torres—Spain +1100

El Nino is quick, strong, impressive in the air, and has deadly accuracy. The 26-year-old striker has scored 23 goals in 71 games for the Spanish side, which is the favorite to win the 2010 Cup. Torres lethal partnership with teammate David Villa should allow plenty of open pitch to orchestrate a consistent attack that will wear down the opposition’s defense. Don’t rule Torres out for a chance at the Golden Boot in 2010.

5. Luis Fabiano— Brazil +1100

Fabiano moves really well in the box, where, thanks to his scoring instinct, he becomes a lethal scoring machine. The 29-year old has scored 25 goals in just 36 national team appearances for the Brazilians. He will get plenty of help from his Samba King teammate, midfield maestro Kaka. The only thing that might prevent him from taking home the Golden Boot is his in ability to stay focused for the entire 90 minutes.

6. Robin van Persie—Holland +1400

Though injuries have plagued his career, when fit Van Persie is the best player on the Netherlands team. He is an explosive striker with a bullet shot and has the ability to score goals from nothing, which can often prove crucial at World Cup finals. He has scored 14 goals thus far during his international career and 48 the last six seasons for his English Premiership club, Arsenal.

7. Gonzalo Higuain—Argentina +1600

Higuain has great awareness in the box and always steps up when the team needs him most. The 22-year-old razor-sharp striker could become a great alternative for the Argentine attack, and has already demonstrated that he has it, scoring two goals in only four games for the national team, but has scored 59 goals in four seasons for Real Madrid in La Liga.

8. Cristiano Ronaldo—Portugal +1800

Fast and tricky, Ronaldo is the type of player that no one likes, but everyone has to respect for his play on the pitch. He possesses a hard curving shot and is one of the most dangerous set-piece components in the game. He has 22 goals in 69 appearances for the Portuguese and will add to that in June. It is time for Ronaldo to truly live up to his star billing on the world stage and put his football skills to work in the race for the Golden Boot.

9. Miroslav Klose—Germany +2800

Klose is a feared and experienced striker. The Bayern Munich star made his German national team debut in 2001, and became a household name after scoring five goals in a loss to Brazil during the 2002 World Cup Final.  The 31-year old then repeated the feat four years later on home soil, an effort the earned him the Golden Boot Award. Klose has scored 48 goals in 94 appearances for the Germans, and in South Africa he is sure to add to that total.

10. Kaka—Brazil +3300

My final pick had to be adjusted as the Ivory Coast’s Didier Drogba went down with a broken arm during a friendly against Japan on June 4. So I went with Brazilian midfielder Kaka, a highly skilful player with a laser shot and superb vision for the pass. He has scored 26 goals in 73 games for the Brazilians, and will add to that total in 2010. Barring injury concerns, if he shows the same level as he did in the Confederations Cup and the World Cup qualifiers, he should help Brazil bid for the title in the 2010, along with a Golden Boot.
