The last stop in our Group Stage 2010 World Cup preview is Group H. It features one of the top favorites, if not the top favorite, in Spain. But will the Spaniards’ growing list of injuries make this group more interesting than originally expected?

Let’s break it down.

CHILE (+6600 to win World Cup)

Chile enters the world Cup with some pretty solid momentum. Ever since it surprised by placing third at the Under-2 World Cup in 2007, it’s had bettors’ attention. The Chileans really impressed in qualifying, beating Argentina, pummelling Colombia twice and finishing second to Brazil. And how about youngster Alexis Sanchez, who already has eight international goals at the age of 21? Second place seems very possible and we can’t even count them out of the running for the whole group given their showing against Argentina.

HONDURAS (+75000 to win World Cup)

Honduras appears destined to be one of the tournament’s whipping boys. Sure, it has some useful players in Wilson Palacios, Amado Guevara and Carlos Pavon. But these guys can’t keep up with Spain and Chile’s scoring ability. Maybe they can give Switzerland a run?

SPAIN (+425 to win World Cup)

Spain or Brazil? Brazil or Spain? The Spaniards are unquestionably one of the top two favorites in South Africa. They have everything a contending team could want – dominant qualifying record (three goals per game, undefeated), Euro 2008 title, an elite keeper in Iker Castillas, breathtaking offense…the only thing in their way is injuries. Will Fernando Torres recover in time for the World Cup after having knee surgery in April?

SWITZERLAND (+22500 to win World Cup)

Can the Swiss surprise? Their U17 World Championship suggests so and they play a very organized style. But I’m still not convinced they’ll score enough to survive this group. They should handle Honduras but not Spain and even Chile could overwhelm them. But if Hakan Yakin and Alexander Frei get hot up front, you never know.

THE PICKS

We often see one team head and shoulders above its peers in the group stage with three (or at least two) teams fighting for the second berth. But Group H is unique in that its top two teams both appear to be far superior to the bottom two. Spain and Chile both look like great picks to survive.

Prediction: Spain and Chile
