Seattle secured its postseason spot for the second consecutive season with its nail biting 2-1 win against Kansas City last Saturday.

Sanna Nyassi put the Sounders up 1-0 in the 66th minute scoring his fourth goal in the last eight days, including his two strikes in Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over Columbus in the U.S. Open Cup title game. Alvaro Fernandez netted the eventual game-winner three minutes later, but the Wiz made it interesting pulling to within one on a penalty-kick goal from Davy Arnaudat in the 85th minute.

Goalkeeper Kasey Keller had two first-half saves and got a little help from the keeper’s best friend as the  potential equalizer caromed off the goalpost in stoppage time, allowing the Sounders to hang on for its fourth straight win in MLS play.

Chivas meanwhile, lifted itself out of last place in the Western Conference as Jorge Flores, Jesus Padilla and Rodolfo Espinoza all scored in the second half, on their way to a commanding 3-0 home victory over Toronto FC on Sunday.

Keeper Zach Thornton posted three saves for his sixth shutout as the Goats broke a three-game losing streak. The 36-year-old resumed his role in goal and despite an injury plagued 2010 that has overshadowed his dazzling form of 2009, was back to his old tricks.

While the fate of both sides has already been decided, this game will still be important as the Sounders will likely want to retain its momentum heading into the postseason and not suffer a letdown against Chivas USA.  Secondly, Seattle has never beaten Chivas USA in league play, and even though some retribution was earned in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals earlier this year, Seattle would still like to hammer the Goats in a regular season match.

It will be interesting to see the changes Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid will make to his starting XI as he carefully weighs out the importance of racking up three more regular season points or resting his squad in preparation for the playoffs. My guess is that he will likely rest key players such as team scoring leader Fredy Montero whose scoring drought is now in its second month.  A mental and physical rest may be the cure that gets Montero back on track.

And if you think Chivas is not serious about their trip to the Pacific Northwest, think again. The Goats have been training on an artificial pitch all this week in preparation for its turf war at Qwest Field.

However, it’s going to take more than a few practices and Thornton’s heroics to disrupt the Sounders in their own house, a place where they are 7-4-3. The Chivas’ defense still has a long way to go as the backline allowed Toronto to unload 14 shots, and has given up at least two goals in each of the three matches prior.

Prediction: Sounders FC have never scored a goal against Chivas USA in three all-time meetings, including a nil-nil draw Aug. 14 at The Home Depot Center; it was the second consecutive goalless draw between the teams. Considering the fact that Seattle will be saving its best for the playoff, and Chivas’ Thornton between the sticks, I expect this one to end in another scoreless draw.
