2012 PGA McGladrey Classic Preview & Pick

PGA Betting – 2012 McGladrey Classic Predictions

So how am I doing? How about two straight weeks picking the winner? I will try to keep the roll going this as the Pros move to the Sea Island Course in Georgia where wind will be a factor and putting will be paramount on a course that measures just over 7000 yards.

2012 McGladrey Classic
Location: Sea Island, Georgia, United States
Course: Sea Island – Seaside Course
Date: Oct 18-21, 2012
Total Purse: US $ 4,000,000
Winner’s Share: US $ 720,000 (18% of total purse)

Defending Champion: Ben Crane ($720,000)

There is not a ton to go on this week – this will be only the third installment of this event. With that in mind, I considered players with good flat sticks and players that have good course management particularly in the wind. Let`s take a closer look at the third installment of the Fall Series:

The Favorites:

Zach JOHNSON 12/1

Tied for 12th place at Seaside in 2010, but missed the cut in 2011. Johnson will play for the first time since the Ryder Cup but has a chance to get back to winning this week – he missed just one cut in all of 2012 and he ranks 12th on TOUR in strokes gained – putting and 19th in par breakers.

Jason DAY 14/1

Has never played this event before but is coming off a solo fourth two weeks ago. He is 10th on the PGA TOUR in strokes gained – putting and 26th in adjusted scoring. Day is certainly due although his recent form suggests otherwise.

Jim FURYK 14/1

Finished T11 here last year and managed the course in typical Furyk style. He is 24th on TOUR in strokes gained – putting and third in adjusted scoring – perfect for this track. Will the Ryder Cup hangover prove too much?

The Contenders:

Jonas BLIXT 18/1

I love this kid`s game but winning two weeks in a row is extremely tough. He is the best putter on TOUR at present which bodes well this week but it is tough to back him two weeks in a row.

Vijay SINGH 20/1

Is rounding into form at the end of this season – Singh finished T4 last week for his best result this year. He has a new putting grip he’s working with and it seems to be making a difference. A confident Vijay is a dangerous one!

Jeff OVERTON 25/1

Has finished top 15 in three of his last four starts and tied for sixth in this event last year. He is in some decent form and will be looking to break through with week.

Michael THOMPSON 30/1

Is a good putter – 25th on TOUR in strokes gained – putting. He finished T13 two weeks ago and last year at this event finished just outside of the playoff. Thompson is an intriguing pick this week for sure!

Brendon DE JONGE 30/1

Rested after a solo runner-up finish at the Shriners where he buried an eagle and 25 birdies. He’s 2-for-2 at Seaside with a T15 in 2010. Ranks 83rd on TOUR in strokes gained – putting, but 33rd in par breakers and 30th in adjusted scoring.

Ben CURTIS 35/1

Has been one of the most up and down guys on TOUR this year with his win at the Valero and his second in the Players before disappearing off the map. He has returned with two straight Top 25s and on a putter’s course, in the wind, you have to like his chances this week. He tied for 10th here in 2010, played well here last year and he is seventh on the PGA TOUR in strokes gained – putting.

Charles HOWELL III 40/1

Certainly hasn`t done much this year but he did finish T11 last week. The Georgia resident finished T6 here in 2010 when he shot a course record 62. He`s been disappointing but a result last week should have him on the radar at very least this week.

The Sleepers:

Gary WOODLAND 50/1

Finished T9 last week – his first top 10 of the year surprisingly. He has been injured and he has been tinkering with his swing this year but things are certainly looking better late in the season. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Davis LOVE III 100/1

Love obviously needs to stay busy after the Ryder Cup! He has made the cut in his last two events but has crumbled on the weekends. At 100/1 he deserves a serious look.

The Pick:

I love Ben Curtis at 35/1 this week. We all know how streaky this guy is and when he is on an uptick, you have to roll with him. Curtis manages the wind well, he is a good putter and he has fared well at this event in the past.

My sleeper is Davis Love III. At 100/1, he is almost impossible to resist.
