2012 PGA Frys.com Open Preview & Pick

PGA Betting – 2012 Frys.com Open Predictions

The Frys.com Open goes this week in California and like last week, there isn’t a whole lot of star power in the field – in fact there may be less this week than last.

2012 Frys.com Open
Location: San Martin, California, United States
Course: CordeValle Golf Club
Date: Oct 11-14, 2012
Total Purse: US $ 5,000,000
Winner’s Share: US $ 900,000 (18% of total purse)

Defending Champion: Bryce Molder ($900,000)

Still some hungry golfers will go at it at the CordeValle Golf Club in California looking to climb or maintain their place in the top 125. This is a putter’s course – ball striking for once will not be at a premium.

Here is a look at who to watch for in this watered down field this week – the Fall Series certainly lacks at ton of intrigue doesn’t it?

The Favorites:

Ernie ELS 14/1

Is the most accomplished entry in the field with Vijay being the other. Els has been in a bit of a slump since the British Open however – zero Top 25s. He finished T4 here last year and should be able to take advantage of the Par 5s on this course. If he brings his average game he should be near the top at very least.

Vijay SINGH 14/1

Singh comes into this event having made 10 straight cuts and three top 10s. He started hot last week but tailed off on the weekend. My bet is that it doesn’t happen two weeks in a row.

Tim CLARK 20/1

Has very quietly put together quite a year after returning from surgery. He ranks second on TOUR in fairways hit and has had three top 10s and four top 25s in 2012. Clark is a sneaky entry this week – keep an eye on this guy!

The Contenders:

Bud CAULEY 25/1

Hasn’t played since a T56 at the BMW Championship. . He finished fourth at the True South Classic, T4 at the RBC Canadian Open and third at the Wyndham Championship and he finished third here last year. He has been close and has a great opportunity to break through this week.

Josh TEATER 33/1

Had a pretty good week last week but tailed off to finish T22 for his fifth top 25 in his last seven starts with no missed cuts in that stretch. He was T7 here last year and comes into this year playing better. He ranks 24th on TOUR in greens hit and 31st in par breakers to boot!

Jonas BLIXT 33/1

He had a share of the lead after 36 and 54 holes last week and eventually finished third. He ranks third in Strokes Gained behind Brandt Snedeker and Luke Donald and as mentioned in the intro – putting is paramount on this track.

Jeff OVERTON 33/1

Finished T13 last week even though he didn’t exactly play his best golf. He has finishes top 15 in two of his last three starts and has 10 top 25s this year. In a watered down field Overton has to be on the radar.

Jimmy WALKER 40/1

Finished T10 last week – his best result since returning from injury. He ranks 22nd on the PGA TOUR in strokes gained-putting and 28th in par breakers – perfect for this track.

Luke GUTHRIE 40/1

Is a two-time Web.com Tour winner and is second on that circuit’s money list. He posted three top 20s in as many starts on the PGA TOUR in June and July. This guy is a winner but this week he may be in a bit deep.

The Sleepers:

David HEARN 50/1

I had his as my sleeper last week but he finished a ho-hum T30. He has made the cut in 14 of his last 16 starts but just can’t seem to keep it going on the weekends. He should contend again as one of the few in the field that had FedEx Cup Playoff experience this year. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Richard H. LEE 66/1

Lee has been playing the best golf of his career as of late – making his last four cuts and finished inside the top 14 in his last three, culminating with his first top 10 last week and he posted a second place finish in a Web.com tour stop recently. Looking for a deep sleeper? Look no further!

Tim HERRON 80/1

Finished T10 last week and played well in all aspects of his game. He is 46th on TOUR in GIR and could surprise this week.

The Pick:

I love Jonas Blixt 33/1 this week. He has played well recently and is certainly due.

My sleeper is Richard H. Lee 66/1  who is playing the best golf of his career and against a weakfish field could break through.
