LAST WEEK: Three weeks ago, I correctly picked Steve Stricker to win the Memorial. My next two picks, Sergio Garcia at the St. Jude and K.J.Choi at the U.S. Open, missed the cut. Go figure. It’s back to the drawing board as the Travelers Championship arrives.

June 23 – 26, 2011
Event: Travelers Championship
Course: TPC River Highlands, Cromwell, Connecticut
Purse: $6,000,000
Defending Champ: Bubba Watson
Winning Share: $1,080,000
FedEX Cup Points Up For Grabs: 500

If you didn’t like seeing Rory McIlroy finish 16-under at a “major” last week, you might want to look away from the final leaderboard of the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands this week.

The last 17 winners at this short little track have finished double-digits under par.

THE CONTENDERS

Hunter Mahan
Travelers Championship odds: +1200

No one owns the Travelers like Hunter Mahan, who won it in 2007, is a two-time runner up and has a fourth-place finish there. His putting is decent enough to keep him in the mix at TPC River Highlands and his ball-striking is fourth-best on Tour.

Nick Watney
Travelers Championship odds: +1500

Despite missing the cut at the U.S. Open, Watney has seven top-10 finishes in 12 tries overall this season. His peripheral ball-striking, putting and scoring numbers all place him in the top 16 on Tour. Still, Watney has cooled off significantly. His hot run may be over.

Bubba Watson
Travelers Championship odds: +2000

Bubba won the Travelers last season, capitalizing on his sizzling putter and length advantage over virtually everyone in the field. He also has two other top-15 finishes at the Travelers, so last year was no fluke. However, we all know Watson is a streaky player. Fact is, he’s cold right now, with four straight finishes outside the top 40.

SOLID PICKS

Bo Van Pelt
Travelers Championship odds: +2500

Van Pelt is an underwhelming but solid pick this week. His game in a good place at the moment; he has three straight top-15 finishes, including the U.S. Open. He’s cracked the top-10 twice in his last four starts at TPC River Highlands. Van Pelt is decent play but he certainly doesn’t leap off the page.

Brandt Snedeker
Travelers Championship odds: +2500

The last few months have been among Brandt Snedeker’s best as a pro. He already has a win this season and has three straight top-20s. More importantly, he’s among the very best putters on Tour and putting is paramount at the Travelers. I like him more than the identically valued Van Pelt.

Zach Johnson
Travelers Championship odds: +2500

You can never go wrong picking Zach Johnson on a tight track. His game just suits this type of course perfectly. While Johnson hasn’t been great of late, he’s a top-10 guy in fairways and putting. I’m taking him very seriously.

Webb Simpson
Travelers Championship odds: +3000

Webb Simpson has quietly been one of the Tour’s more consistent players of late, cracking the top 25 six times in his last seven starts. He’s also been on the cusp of victory, posting two runner-up finishes this season. His ball-striking stats match up similarly to the popular pick Mahan. Could he finally break through this week?

THE SLEEPER

Fredrik Jacobson
Travelers Championship odds: +4000

Interesting. Jacobson hasn’t fared well at the Travelers at the past, missing the cut twice, but he’s played well of late. He was 14th at the U.S. Open. He’s also among the best putters on Tour. If his nerves don’t get the better of him, he could contend.

THE PICK

This is a rare week in that I don’t have a particularly good feeling about anyone. Mahan almost seems too obvious. Johnson has the right game, for sure, but is he playing well enough right now? Sometimes, I advice golf bettors to take the long shot any time they don’t have a good feeling about anyone else. I tried applying that logic to Jacobson – but it just doesn’t feel right. He’s played decently but hasn’t truly contended for a title in months.

I’ll go with the tried-and-true Johnson.

Travelers Championship pick: Zach Johnson +2500
