2009 WGC – CA Championship Preview/Picks

This week’s event is the 2009 WGC – CA Championship at Doral, and in our preview we must note that Tiger Woods takes eight months off for knee surgery, and he’s instantly the favorite in any tournament he plays…

Golf Betting – Woods, Ogilvy Set For Doral Duel

March Madness betting favorites and Tiger Woods have a lot in common, so it seems. The Tar Heels stumbled out of the gate, yet have stayed the online betting favorites all season. Woods takes eight months off for knee surgery, and he’s instantly the favorite in any tournament he plays.Tiger takes to one of his favorite courses, Doral Golf Resort, when he tees off at the WGC-CA Championships this Thursday, but he’ll face stiff competition from Geoff Ogilvy, who is rediscovering his form of 2006, when he won the U.S. Open.

Woods has dominated the WGC events, winning 15 of 31, including six of nine CA Championships. Only one of those wins has come at Doral, as the event started there in 2007. Tiger also won here in 2005 and 2006, when it was called the Doral Open.

Ogilvy joined Darren Clarke as the only player other than Woods to have won more than one WGC, as his win in the World Match Play Championship a couple weeks ago was his third. Ogilvy has won two Match Plays, and that style of play will suit him well if it comes down to a Sunday showdown with Woods, or anyone for that matter.

Ogilvy is even-tempered, consistent, and he’s playing some of the best golf of his life, with two victories and three top-20s in his five starts this season.

Vijay Singh’s track record at Doral shows he should be a factor, as he has a T-2 and T-11 finish in the last two tournaments, but his recent knee surgery rings some alarms. Sergio Garcia could also be a sportsbook factor, as he has four top-fives in this event. Other online betting options are Phil Mickelson, whose 2005 Sunday duel with Woods is one of the top moments at Doral, and Aaron Baddeley, who has a pair of top-15s at Doral the past two seasons.

Ogilvy will push for the win, but Woods has a few courses on which it seems he owns the deed:

Augusta National, Torrey Pines, Medinah, Pebble Beach and Doral. The finishing hole with the water hazard on the left of the fairway is enough to frighten any golfer, so expect the 18th to play a role on Sunday.

It’ll be exciting, but bet on Tiger Woods to make a victorious return to stroke play.
