Team USA and arrives in the Quarter-finals as Number One seeds after an unbeaten Round Robin portion of the Men’s Olympic Hockey tournament. Americans everywhere are dreaming of years past when an unheralded team took Gold on home soil for their only Gold Medal ever in Olympic Men’s Hockey action. They will face the Number 8 ranked Swiss in their first game of the Medal rounds in what undoubtedly is the easier of the two brackets in the Gold Medal chase in Vancouver.
Team USA entered this year’s Men’s Hockey tournament as a dark horse to win a Medal but has suddenly emerged a serious Gold Medal contender thanks to a Sunday night win over their cross-border rivals, Team Canada. The USA has largely leaned on Goaltender Ryan Miller to carry the load, but he has been supported by strong offensive efforts from Brian Rafalski, Chris Drury and David Backes and good defensive performances from Ryan Suter, and the Johnson boys.
The USA has played the Swiss already in the tournament, earning a 3-1 victory in their inaugural game. They have a ton of confidence at the moment and now realize that they do not have to play their best game in order to win. Ryan Miller is a difference maker as has been demonstrated with his club team the Buffalo Sabres. He is quickly emerging as one of the top three or four goaltenders on the planet. Team USA should be able to ride the momentum and gain a place in the Semi-finals with a win over the pesky Swiss.
Team Switzerland finished as the eighth seed after the Round Robin, but gave very team that they faced fits. They play a trap style that has been effective in recent Swiss International play. Although the Swiss are not a real threat to win Wednesday’s game, they are certainly capable of keeping the game close. The only factor working against them is the two straight shootout victories that they have garnered to get to this point in the Olympic tournament. How much have these two game taken out of the Swiss players? We’ll have to wait and see.
The United States is heavily favored in this game and rightfully so. However, Team Switzerland’s chemistry and ability to play a total team game should keep this match close. Keep in mind that no team in the tournament has been able to score more than four goals on the defensively minded Swiss.
